been trying to spot where i made the blunder in this game. I think my opening was not great, am I right in saying that Pc5 is not a recognised opening move?

and i seemed too eager to exchange pieces despite a worse position

Yes, Pc5 is not a great move

Looks like you both missed 12.Bxc5

15...d4 wins immediately

And why didn't you play 16...f5?

I don't have any computer to help me here at the moment, but it looks like after 18.Nxe4, you should have played 18...Rxd1 and after 19.Rxd1, you can play 19...b5 to protect your pawn (which also overprotects a7).

Also, h6 looks to be a blunder. Better may have been Rc8 or Qd7. You didn't really need to play h6 because the knight's jumping points are all protected by your bishop (in the event of a knight sac or mate attack preparation) and from what I can tell you didn't have any back rank mate threats.

Finally, there's an opening in the Sicilian called the Severino Variation (or something to that effect) that's 1...c5 followed by 2...e5. Chessmaster has yelled at me for playing it before because it seriously weakens f7 and opens a diagonal straight to your king (you basically did the bishop on c4 a favor), not to mention the fact that now d5 is a perfect protected outpost for White's knight (you can't attack it with pawns anymore). A good plan for White might have been to play d3 then Bg5 and take the knight on f6 followed by Nd5.

And now that I'm really paying attention, I'm totally confused as to why White castled instead of taking your knight on e4 after you took his pawn. Why did you take that pawn in the first place?

don't know really, i've noticed that whenever i've castled, I don't advanced the pawns in front of the king during the middle game

cheers for the comments.

re h6, did that to prevent Ng5 which is also protected by his bishop.

and i took the pawn as if he takes to knight I can fork him with my pawn at d5, though i don't this gains me much

21.Ng5 is met with either 21...Bxg5 22.Bxg5 Rf8 or the more direct 21...Ne5! protecting f7 and attacking White's queen.

Watch out for tactics that can backfire. After 5.Nxe4 d5, Black has 6.Bb5+!

Yes 3..c5 is not recommended. It wastes a valuable development tempo and weakens the d5 square. There were some interesting tactics in this opening. White missed 7.Nxe5! if 7...dxe5, 8.Bxf7+, Ke7 9.Bg5+. This trap occurs more often than you would think, especially in the Sicilian (which, come to think of it, is what your opening resembles after 3...c5)

but why not 8... Kxf7?
