Stockfish nowadays is 3800+, even.
I don't think Stockfish is 3800. He's around 3300-3400, at least, the rating estimation.
Anyway, Stockfish would definitely crush Magnus.
As stated before, Magnus is 2800, and Stockfish is 3300. So, Magnus < Stockfish

Oh sorry, now i checked TCEC match and it really saying 3564 for SF; i have seen that 3800+ a few days/weeks ago there on CCC, so from there my confusion. Prolly 3564 is the right number, agree.

The best robot, for sure. Magnus is at 2800 but there's no way he could beat a 3600 engine.

This isn't even a question anymore. It's been resolved for all time. No human will ever catch up to the strongest engines. It's like asking, "Who would win a weightlifting contest--the strongest human or a forklift?"

I'm confused as to how a rating is determined then. I thought rating was determined compared to who you play. As the distance grows the increment of increase shrinks until you get no addition for the win. Wouldn't Stockfish simply reach the improvement cap against the best player and freeze at that level? Maybe it's against other machines, but even then isn't there a max or is that not how it's calculated?

but now that's just not the case.

Stockfish has about 3500 ELO. Magnus has 2800 (or 3360 on Chess.com)
Too bad that we'll never find out what the guy meant by "chess robot".
