Why do people blunder?

Blunders in chess can be multifaceted and arise due to several reasons: 1. **Overlooking Threats:** Sometimes players focus too much on their own plans and overlook their opponent's potential threats, leading to blunders such as missing an opponent's attacking move or leaving a valuable piece unprotected. 2. **Time Pressure:** In faster-paced games, time constraints can lead to rushed decisions, causing players to make errors or overlook critical moves, resulting in blunders. 3. **Lack of Focus:** Loss of concentration or distractions during a game can lead to lapses in judgment, causing players to make mistakes they would typically avoid. 4. **Fatigue:** Long games or tournament rounds can lead to mental fatigue, impacting decision-making abilities and increasing the likelihood of blunders. 5. **Miscalculations:** Misjudging the consequences of a move or inaccurately assessing potential outcomes can result in blunders, where players don't foresee the full implications of their actions. 6. **Overambitious Plans:** Sometimes players get overly enthusiastic about their strategies without adequately considering the risks involved, leading to vulnerable positions and eventual blunders. 7. **Psychological Factors:** Nervousness, anxiety, or overconfidence can impact a player's decision-making, causing them to make mistakes they would otherwise avoid. Even seasoned and skilled chess players are susceptible to blunders, as the complexity of the game coupled with various psychological and strategic elements makes it challenging to maintain perfection throughout a match.

I blunder mostly late in the evening when I'm tired, according to the stats.

Because we’re only human, of flesh and blood, born to make mistakes (The Human League). No exception to this, even the very best (world champions) make mistakes in chess.

I'm only human after all...

The only reason that anybody ever blunders is by playing too quickly.

Humans make mistakes?

Brain fog from only having time to play when tired. Switching time controls and not engaging active thinking about changes in position. Only evaluating some of the elements in play and missing key factors due to this.

Totally this. But then I have some days when I’m just not sharp at all. Chess is helping me to see this. Interestingly I’m a morning person but I’ve noticed that I’m not necessarily that sharp at chess first thing. Last hour before bed is typically the time I have to play/study but it’s not the best time for my brain.
