My best game ever....

It was an interesting game and close by both players. However, you both made some blunders along the way. It was lucky you were able to fork the check between his king and queen but you could have played a little better.
Good game though.

Why did he open up his kingside ? Strange move recapturing with his pawn when the kings are castle opposite one another.

For someone with your rating (I looked at your profile) this was not a bad game at all! Congrats. Yes both players made some mistakes but you exploited Black's weakened King side well. You obviously blundered by allowing the trap 16...Bg5 but hey sometimes you get lucky. It usually helps after castling Queen side to move your King out of harms way eg. to b1 especially with those Black bishops placed as they were. Black made the mistake of not protecting his King's side well enough (eg. by moving his Queen to the other side of the board) and further weakening it by 21...h5. At that time you had your pieces well placed in the centre. Get the game analysed by the computer (if you haven't already) - the feedback always helps. Good job!

Black didn't recapture with his Bishop because he would have lost his d pawn that way. But maybe it would have been the better move nevertheless. In my experience, Bishops on f6/c6/c3/f3 are very strong. For example, a Bishop on f6 covers all the squares that a White knight could go to by moving forward.

I mean a White knight on f3 :)

i thought your 6 move Qd1 was a loss of tempo, you say better to retreat, but not then in my view, you had a better position,
move 9 f3 I thought Be2 was better,
(black was better to on move 13, to to Bxf6, then if you take the d6 pawn with your queen then black takes queen and Bxc3 with a weak queenside, and king)
with your white bishop I thought not fxe but f4, then following with g3 sac a pawn for a good kingside pawn structure avoiding the queen king attack with bishop,
why he did Qa5 is he had to move his queen, due the the knight check and discovered attack on his queen, with your rook, only other move i can think of is Qb8 if moving the queen, but the best move was f5,
