My first smothered mate!

Every Chess player can remember key games they have played. I recently won with my first ever smothered checkmate and i'd thought I would share it with you. As the Game stuck to the Blackburne Shilling Gambit till the very end, I shan't be commenting on the moves.

Luke_Staden

I got White and Black mixed up when putting in the moves, I was playing as black.

Nice work! I love to see a good smothered mate, hopefully one day I will have on too :)

NGUNI

Well done, poor guy that lost.I have lost a game in this manner .

I have to wonder about a variation in which players are allowed to take their own pieces, for example, to avoid being check mated in this manner.  Would that make the game more interesting, or ruin it?

Luke_Staden

I think a variation that allows players to take their own peices would not be a fun one. Using opponent pieces to trap their king is an art in its self. Also it would mean that there were fewer ways  checkmate. This would almost eradicate positional advantages and it would lead to much more long drawn out games.

The "costage trap". Nice. I just played you. We should rematch, if you'd like.

I made a few Smothered Mates at chess.com...

king_warrior

this is well known trap, and i am surprised that tour oponent didn't know that. I had several wins that way, but my oponents never opened a single chess book. Anyway good work! That is the reason why we must learn from books and not just play games...
