Playing like Mikhail Tal ? (Training)

Sort:
ObliviousSheep

Hi everyone, I've studied a lot Tal's games and I started recently to train myself playing the same style. Not at GM level of course, just enough to be proud of my games.

Here are two games I played a few days ago, first one was a blitz game, please tell me what do you think of it !

Here I'm playing black:

And the second one, I'm playing white:

Were my sacrifice justified ?
Tell me please how can I improve !

awesome game

Aah thank you mates.

Yes Jong, Qg3 and if he defends with his queen then maybe bring the horse closer so taking my bishop with his queen would be bad I guess Laughing

Tal was also my "mentor"(My teacher had us pick players to emulate very early in his students' development). If you watch through my games, you'll notice that I am very good at launching attacks, and that at my best, I can do what Tal does: apply pressure on my opponent till they crack, like an egg.

One important thing to note:

The difference between real Tal and pretender Tal noob is that Tal played with the endgame in mind. I kid you not.

I agree Tal was an artist Surprised

His sacrifices always gave him some kind of an advantage so, even if refuted those was not dumb sacrifices, for sure !

Yeea IAmAquarius I get you, Tal was your mentor, you are very good at launching attacks, you crack your opponent like an egg, and as a "pretender Tal noob" (which I'm not, I've specified it's just kind of a training) I played without the endgame in mind BUT not you, of course, you rules Cool

beautiful game

Sacrifices are good, especially the first. But in Tal's games the build-up phase tended to be faster. Not that it would be necessarily better for you, I'm just pointing out the difference in style.

In the second game, I'm sure Tal would play 4.d4, and that it is a better move. Black is behind in developement, so opening the positon feels good.

In the first one, I just don't like 8...cxd4, it relinquishes the tension and basically forces you into slow mode. 8...b6 seems more natural, and perhaps 8...Qc7 is OK as well.

Same style I try to play in

Yesterday I did something like this, I think the tactic was innaccurate but I did get -2 material in return for my opponent's weak king.

Here's another tactical game:

To be fair, these are far from being my favourite games, I have more beautiful sacrifices.

But I have to admit, Tal is definitely my favourite World Champion and I try to play like him fairly often. tongue.png

EDIT: I found quite possibly my best one.

I'm really proud of myself for finding this one.

Yes, nice games.  To play like Tal, maneuver your pieces in such a way that the ratio is greater than that of the defending pieces.  Tal did this even when there was no clear winning combination.  The result?  The pressure and difficulty of proper defense often caused the defending player to "crack". happy.png  On my (unfinished) styles and systems blog on chess.com I cover the styles (and how to play like) most of all the world champions.  You will see its not too hard.  Also, It was after I began randomly picking world champion styles to "play as" that many things changed for me.  Shortly afterwards I began beating top masters, as you can see on my blog.  Just take a look at how to play petrosians games, simple and genius!  Then mix it with Tal's greater ratio pressurization and Fischers "play to win" mentality with a healthy dose of "Enemy king vulnerability" of Morphy!  Mix it up and have fun!  Enjoy the read!

great games IDASP!

do you always play the englis opening? I ask because i want to find an opening to learn and until now c4 always seemed much too positional for me...but after seeing your games i might give it a try =)

El_Chapeau12

Nice Games while not always correct, the sacs are really in Tal style

Here is a FIDE game I played today:

Damn. I like how coordinated your pieces, tactics, and plans are in launching an attack. You remind me a bit of Tal. And I like how you sacrificed pieces to hunt down the king too. Big thumbs up to your post.

Don't try to force yourself to play like one specific player. Tal was revolutionary, but he was also original.

There is nothing wrong with your style. It's slightly less creative, but then again as a fellow sub 2000 player we don't really have too much of a style...yet. Focus on being good at attacking, defending, positioning, endgames, and your openings. Then, as you progress, your style will take shape.

You're a good player, and that one rook sacrifice was a little Tal-esque. But don't weigh yourself down by forcing games to be like Tal. I saw another person in this thread talking about how Tal was his spirit animal or something. That's nonsensical, just play good chess.

Loved both those games. Beautiful to watch.

Here's my "Tal" game, from the Malaysia vs Canada rated match:

Or another one... an OTB game from the 1980s:

Tal's is a tricky style to emulate.  Either your sacrifice is sound or not, and if not, it can still work if your opponent can't find the response....  but if unsound, you will start losing games by throwing away material for no tangible gains as your opponents get better.  Its going to work well at higher speed games where finding a response takes too long.  Good luck, seems like you are off to a good start at least!
