Nice,I actually was able to execute the smothered mate myself,it was a long time ago in one of my correspondence games on here.

Cool happy.png I find that this checkmate is really rare in practical play - probably because strong players resign at the threat of this mate, and since the discovered attack rarely is ever set in an OTB game.

Agreed,I find most of the checkmate patterns are rather rare in practical play, Anastasia's mate, Blackburne's mate, the smother mate and there are tons others.  The only one I've every gotten was the smothered mate.  Well yeah that's true, most don't play it down to mate,it's funny though because remember that game I referenced in our messages Fischer vs Byrne,...Byrne was a real sport about it,as he let Fischer mate him,it's actually noted in the PGN of the game, right down to mate, which I'm sure Byrne saw before it actually happened OTB.

(Pss pss was this the game that you told me you won against that 1900 + rated player)

Chesslover0_0

nevermind I just read some of the analysis there lol haha well ....I guess a 1900  wouldn't fall for a smothered mate huh but what are you a 1600 player doing playing a little 1200 player, shame on you sir bahahahaha jk

I've gotten quite a few including the smothered mate, back rank mate, rook and bishop(in my game it was queen and bishop but rook and bishop was more common than queen and bishop in that position), queen and rook, 2 rooks, 1 rook and king, queen and bishop and queen and knight.

I agree with @ChessBoy513 in the fact that I have gotten a lot of checkmate types too, but this is probably just because we likely play a lot of chess. Some checkmates may not even be that difficult, yet are somewhat rare in actual play. 2 Bishops (and King) vs King is a good example that isn't extremely common in practical play, but it is definitely a pattern that you should know happy.png

p.s. Also, Anastasia mates are not that rare for me: they come up every now and then.

Yeah

Even though your opponent wasn't so strong player, your game was real romanticly. I liked itthumbup.png!

Well I haven't, most of my mates end with the Queen but I've gotten a few odd mates, involving a Rook and Bishop combination, and maybe a couple of smothered mates and a few other odd sorties.

nice game!

nice smothered mate. i've done it just once a while ago

KeSetoKaiba

Thanks @chesschesskid

@gdzen I still get excited when I get one. I've gotten a smothered mate in my games about 3 or 4 times I think (I was also checkmated by a smothered mate 2 times I can recall, but I let them play it since it was unavoidable and it is a cool finish). This was still the most elegant smothered mate I've played so far though happy.png
