So much for the Yugoslav attack, long live the Sicilian Dragon!

Here's a game I played just now in the Sicilian Dragon, Yugoslav attack. In this game I used a line where I delayed castling and went into a "Dragondorf". A lot of people think the Sicilian Dragon has been refuted by the Yugoslav, in fact, I had a player who beat me with the Yugoslav a few days ago say "That's why I stopped playing the Dragon, the Yugoslav attack is too strong". But that game it wasn't the Yugoslav that beat the Dragon, it was a simply a better chess player who beat me. I feel as a Dragon player it's my responsibility to represent the opening and prove that it's not been refuted and that Bobby Fischer was wrong when he said you could easily just sacrifice and mate against it.

Thanks for the tidbit of analysis Pfren. I know the game was far from perfect, I'm a new player and just started playing chess 6 months ago (but have been playing every day since).

But I do think I showed if a novice like me can fight off the Yugoslav attack, then anyone can! And I hope more people will play the Sicilian Dragon and not worry about this paper tiger.

To be honest, I never trusted the "Dragondorf"- sounds and looks like a mixed salad. Currently its theoretical status is not good. The regular Dragon should be a better choice, although there you risk losing to a patzer who is better booked-up than you are.

Well I'm a patzer too, though improving, so I don't mind losing to other patzers.

I will admit when I play the Dragondorf against people I play regularly, who know I'm going to delay castling and play a6, I have a much harder time. But I think the normal version with castling is sound against the Yugoslav, and the Dragondorf can always be kept in the arsenal as a surprise weapon. The thing is I learned the Dragondorf first, Andrew Martin's Chessbase DVD on it is what taught me how to play chess and I'm just now starting to learn the normal version with castling against the Yugoslav.

Long live the dragon!!!

This is laudable effort, but disappointing. Mogwai confidently states that he can repel the Yugoslav Attack, but fails to present the full thrust of the Attack with a Qside castle by White, pushing the Kside pawns and sac'ing the Rook for the Kside N. Instead, he makes a weak 10. Bd5 move by White by trading the key White bishop unnecessarily; this bad move defuses the Yugoslav Attack! Black does have resources against the Yugoslav with key moves on the Qside followed by a risky but exciting sac of his Black QRook for White N on c3, but this is not mentioned.  I agree that the Dragondorf is another good strategy for Black, but if Mogwai is going to quote Fischer, he needs to make the aggressive moves of the Yugoslav that Fischer and others have played, and then refute it.
