If he hadn't trapped his own queen with 6. Qg4 and 7. Nf3 and instead played 6.Qf6 you would have been down a pawn. And with a knight on the rim, you probably lacked conpensation for sed pawn.
THIS is why you do NOT bring out the queen early!

Nice queen capture. When faced against someone playing that against me I like to play 2 ... Nc6 and then follow up with 3 ... Nf6 (Although if 3 Bc4 then g6 is needed to prevent checkmate). Saves you from losing the pawn and develops pieces

Yea, it is a very good idea, unless there is a sure MATE, or win of big material, to keep her away from the outer squares for a bit. Nice game :).
