New Netflix Series "The Queens Gambit"

Ran into this last night and watched the first episode.  Anyone else watching it?

It looks like it might be a good show, not necessarily for the chess, although chess is a major theme.

In the first episode, a 9 year old girl ends up in an orphanage after her mom dies in a car crash.  This story takes place in the 1960s in Kentucky.

She sees the orphanage custodian playing with a chess board in the basement.  She watches him enough in secret to learn the basic moves.  Then she asks him to teach her the game.

He is a grumpy old man who has no interest in teaching her.  When she says she figured out the basic moves he offers to play against her.  She loses the first game then wins, and eventually he realizes she is a genius and wants to help her.

Also in the plot is the orphanage's policy of giving the girls tranquilizers to control their behavior.  The girls know this and save the tranquilizers.  the little girl becomes addicted to them.  Then the law changes and they can no longer give them to children.

I'm looking forward to the next episode.

You are right, that is the appropriate place to discuss this.  But I beat chess.com in mentioning it first!

Edit: actually. I guess Doggers had an article on it a couple of days ago but I didn't see it.  Now its the headline on the homepage, so....... as Rosanna Rosannadana used to say,

"never mind"

interesting, I'll have to check it out

It is a little frustrating not to see much of the board, but that is hard to expect that in a movie or TV show.  And boy, they move rapidly with a 90 minute time control.   I like seeing the old liturature:   Pawn Power by Hans Kmoch, My Chess Career by Capablanca, MCO and Chess Life.   And the cars, the beautiful and perfectly restored cars.  The story is pretty engrossing for the first two episodes.

I'm watching it. It's fascinating when they play chess

Love it, great acting, camera, etc. Fascinating period of 50's and 60's

Sunday i will look at it . . . .

I’m several episodes in and an enjoying it. One SERIOUS problem. Why the heck are they blitzing from move 1?? Everything else about the chess is pretty spot on. So to enjoy the show I have just been pretending that this story takes place in a parallel universe where blitz was the standard time control in the 1960’s at the U.S. Open. Small but important error, kind of unforgivable...I couldn’t help but to laugh at the boys who are supposed to be moving the pieces at the display boards. They’d pass out trying to keep up I these “games”.

I will have to ask my friend to help me out. My subscription ended recently.

There is an excessive amount of eye contact between opponents! When I play OTB, I might occasionally side-eye my opponent for less than a millisecond, no more.

i watched the first two episodes and i found very interesting as far as chess. . .

There was one Oops . . . The old man said "kb3" then moved "Kf3" minor flaw .

i never used Netflix and didn't know i had it on my fire . . .

Can't wait to continue the series. So Monday I'll watch 3 & 4 . . .

Jenium

Old notation? King's bishop file 3?

RichColorado

I watched the 3 rd episode of the Queens Gambit and could see the opening s in the movies . . .

the first was the fools mate, Sicilian defense was there . . .

I thought the Queens Gambit is when the "C" pawn is pushed to C4 on the 2nd or third move by white. . .

It actually game some new thoughts about chess . . .

Don't miss it . . .

They are using old notation so he wouldn't have said Kb3 as Jenium pointed out.

They were using something called descriptive notation, I learned something new. Each square has two names depending on if you are playing white or black. Nowadays we use algebraic notation which is way easier to understand.

I've been watching movie series "The Queens Gambit". An existential journey of a young girl who loves chess playing and learning. Very good. Chess in the movie is so authentic. The title alone. But not just chess, of course. But also life, education, even music. See it!

I just started watching it....liking it till now

TheQuestionableMilkman

Am i the only one wondering why she only played one match against her opponent in all the finals? Great series though.

I have watched the whole series and enjoyed. They have to use English Descriptive notation so even the non chess pl.ayers can enjoy.  I remember well the wonderful Chess magazine featured. Very nice series. tongue.png  I have played all the openings featured.
