do they end it? is it a draw? does it count as resigning?

harlons

Rematch if you really faint? Otherwise you'll faint every time you lose position. Lol

Lc0_1

i just thought that if you were gonna make a move, them boom, you faint and fall to the floor, what does the arbiter do? XD maybe a rematch, or they could just wait until you wake up to continue the game?

TheJaqueMaster

Your opponent has to faint too and you will continue the match in #faintland

Make sure opponent’s clock is running.

I don't have the faintest idea.

Chessflyfisher

They overstep the time control and lose.

Zardorian
Your opponent becomes very flattered by the fact that you were so impressed by his/her chess prowess, you fainted.

That, and your head falls down and bounces on your desk, or whatever service you happen to be playing on/at. The next day, you have to go to work and explain the grotesque goose egg on your forehead to everyone. Just tell him you ran into a door or something.

Also, if you don’t recover fast enough from your fainting spell, your clock runs out.

Under USCF rules, it counts as a forfeit.  For purposes of the tournament, it is a win, but there is no effect on either player's rating.

(And now I'll go find my rulebook and check to see if that is correct.)

thanks! wait- they actually have a rule about what to do?!

JamesColeman

I would have thought that rule or not, common sense and general human decency would apply - if I were the opponent then I’d stop the clocks and try to get the game finished at a time when my opponent felt better, or possibly agree a draw if appropriate.

There are cases not that long ago of people who have died during a game so I’m sure there’s some kind of contingency as to what to do.

Health issue, such as a heart attack.

52yrral

I've been killed many times in an innocent game of chess!

I checked the rule book.  I couldn't find anything.  I thought it was a forfeit, but there isn't any provision for a medical emergency during a game, and in fact there is a rule that if each player has made a move, the game has to be decided.

So, the fainting (or sick, or dead) player would end up losing on time.

(I remember the subject coming up on the USCF discussion boards back when I was a member and TD, and I thought the outcome was forfeit, but I can't find that in the rules.  I'm surprised actually.  While it's not a common occurrence, I would imagine that it isn't a bizarrely rare occurrence that someone must withdraw from a game in progress due to a medical condition.   I suppose they don't cover it out of fear that someone who is losing to a lower rated player might suddenly become "sick" to avoid the loss of ratings points.
