On the day of 11 may 1996 Garry kasparov was defeated by a Super Computer. I think it was the first time a computer could win over a Grandmaster.  It was watched by a big audience.

First time the world champion lost a match against the machine yes. Plenty of grandmasters bit the dust before.

He won the 1996 match. Lost the 1997 match, although yes, he lost one game (the first one) in the '96 match.

I vaguely remember watching one of the games that Kasparov won annotated on youtube. I don't remember how it went but I remember the gist of it. It was Kasparov's long term plan vs deep blue's calculation ability, and it lost. Pretty impressive even 20 years later.
