Hey been playing 2 months, demolished my way to 1200 rapid which is top 10% of players on chess.com was really proud of myself to do that within 2 months of play. Recently i've been playing blitz and my ego has been completely shaken because i literally cannot break past 700 blitz and am sitting in the 600 range. I'm not kidding when I say it feels like 600 blitz players are BETTER than 1200 rapid players, is this a common thing i'm really confused and am hoping for some answers

I looked at this around when it was posted but didn't have much to say so I didn't comment.
Well I checked back and you are 1300 rapid, 900 blitz. Congratulations! What are your thoughts now, out of curiosity?

seems like OP was stuck around 600 blitz for like 7 days. it's not that long.

When I was around 1700 Rapid, I was around 1200 - 1300 blitz. For me Blitz and Rapid are not exactly the same. In rapid you have a lot of time to figure things out and when you are in trouble on the board, you look for ways to come out of it. In blitz, the time you spend trying to solve a problem will become an advantage for your opponent.

Interesting. I see that the gap between your rapid and blitz decreased a lot though since then (2025 rapid, 1880 blitz).

I guess that's because I have come to the understanding that rapid and blitz are not exactly the same and the way I play and take risk in blitz, I will not do that on purpose in Rapid.

If you also want to be a good blitz player, you need to work on your flagging skills as game in most cases comes down to flagging.

Aha makes sense. Curious if it's the same for OP (adjusted to how blitz is played?)
Otoh, if you play with increment I guess flag matters a lot less.

It's normal that blitz rating is a couple hundred lower than rapid.

Mine are around 1000 blitz and around 1400 rapid.

The blitz pool is in general, a little bit tougher.

This can be the other way around for some people too. Some people play blitz in a way, where they rely pretty heavily on the clock. Kind of playing passively and waiting the opponent to run into time trouble trying to attack and then blundering and after that they win. Some people are just fast at playing at their level and don't benefit from longer time controls and these people can have higher blitz ratings than rapid.

For me it is the normal way around and a little more so than usual, I guess. I like to try to think things through and there just isn't enough time in blitz for me to do that. I think it is the same for you.

Hey again, whilst I still feel blitz players are much stronger than rapid I fixed some issues I was having. I wasn't playing in the mindset of blitz, I like to analyse allot and calculate lines. I was able to have some success when I just started to play instinctually and not calculate as much.

Don’t sweat it.

Blitz and rapid are two different games and time controls.

I find it easier in blitz somehow I'm 850 blitz and 700 rapid, I guess I am just good at blitzing out moves and making my opponent get low time

aculeues

I get that. I have a rapid rating of 1200+ but only 750 in blitz. We are probably not used to making moves quickly, and btw people who played me are also higher rated in rapid, similar to me. Is that your case?

I like to play fast so my blitz is higher.

Ah, i see what you mean yes. Which is why I started to find 5+5 appealing as it has enough time for calculations imo

Well I checked and see you play 5+5. I've been suspecting that the 5+5 pool is a stronger blitz pool compared to other blitz tc's, and posted that same comment in a thread in the cheating forum. I may be wrong, as I just have anecdotal data lol. Subjectively though it feels like I've played people who play like 3 min blitz or 5 min blitz at like 1500+ who don't feel as strong as ~1450 rated 5+5 opponents...

Well, that doesn't make any sense.

My gut feeling is also that the strongest pools are in blitz the 5|5 and in rapid the 15|10 pools.

This is based on the fact that these have to be selected from the menu and are not the default and also the fact that these formats have an increment.

Also 15|10 rapid is what is recommended for improvement by many, so I suspect a lot of players who have the will to improve pick this and the purely recreational people stick to the default 10 min rapid. This would result in the 15|10 pool being stronger. I assume the same might be true in blitz.

This is all purely speculation though and based on absolutely no concrete evidence, so take it with a rather large grain of salt.
