So, is it true that a rating of 1200 on this site in long "live" games or "on line" (correspondence) games is akin to about an 800 FIDE rating?

Unless they changed the rating system more since I last checked, an 800 FIDE rating doesn't exist. A 1200 on this site is basically a beginner, because the majority of people who make a new account on chess.com are beginners, start with a 1200 rating, and go from there. I think the ratings start to stabilize a bit over 1700, with 1700 corresponding to a rating of perhaps 1400 in USCF or FIDE (I don't think there is a big difference between USCF and FIDE ratings below 2000). It's hard to quantify 1200 as any federation rating as it's the rating you're assigned when you start on this site.
