1500-1600 bullet, what is the deal?

I've spent so much time in the 1500-1700 rank class of bullet chess. Here are some observations:

-Majority of players of this rank seem to have a highest rank of something like 1850-2000. Myself included. I can go on losing streaks of 10+ games that span over multiple days of playing and lose rank down to 1500. Just getting destroyed by 1550s when I was just 1800 a week ago.

- Trash talk, poor sportsmanship, not resigning when totally lost, running clock, etc. (I will admit to some of this myself, I'm not perfect) I think it is contagious at this level.

Lately I've enjoyed a better streak of playing and have been hovering in the 1900 rank. It is glorious. Zero trash talk. Almost no chatting whatsoever. People resign. I win some, I lose some, no 10 game losing streaks. The players have a highest rank that relates to their current ranking. Night and day.

Probably just a shear numbers thing really. The more people there are, the more weirdos you will have. But anyone else have this feeling about the world of 1600 bullet?

I think it is a universal experience not unique to 1600. 800 is worse than 1200 is worse than 1600 is worse than 2000 when it comes to behavior in my experience. That is why the finish to the pro chess league was so surprising because you never expect that behavior from the top level

So I literally just got up to 1500 and think you are both right. I think part of it is all the way up to the 1500's you can win games with that kind of behavior and if you don't engage in it it's easy to lose games. For example if someone is constantly threatening your queen with no strategy whatsoever you might lose on time if you are trying to have a strategy (at least for folks like me who are usually ranked below 1500 and can't come up with complicated tactics that quickly a lot of the time).

I've noticed I'll go on a lot of losing streaks as well and I think it's because you get frustrated if every single game people are doing these things and your frustration is making you make mistakes.

I actually ended up disabling chat because people would beat me and say things like "LMFAO" or I would beat some one and they would repeatedly challenge a rematch and cuss me out (literally cuss words with spaces in them) if I didn't agree to. Below 1500 and especially below 1300 can be really toxic.

Anyway, I guess you can take comfort in knowing that people resort to these tactics because they have to. Although it's kind of a bummer when you get stuck in that rating.

Chat disabling is a bless. No need to deal with moronic comments.

I dropped from 1700 to 1400 again. Sometimes i am puzzled what is going on. There is a time when i lose on time no mater how hard i try.

I'm realizing that bandwith is key. I will lose on time over and over. I'll be premoving almost every move.  My feeling is that I'm ahead or equal on time, but then suddenly I'm down 10 sec. Then I'll turn off wifi and use data or switch to laptop and bring my rank back up. What happens is they move instantly, but there's a lag so their clock is ticking and you think they are taking time. When you watch their clock, it jumps back up. So all that time you thought you were waiting for them to move, YOUR clock has been running.

High 1900s and above I can no longer compete on my phone and I have to move to a desktop. So I cycle between 1800 using my phone, then bring myself back up to 1950s and repeat haha

I think mastering the Hippo opening will improve my hyperbullet bullet rating to 1600 at least. My friend plays Hippo exclusively and he’s 1900 ! I should be able to do that too.

You know someone did this opening against me and I lost so I tried it too (didn't realize it had a name). It's pretty nice! I found that you often end up with positions that are really easy to think through because your pieces are well protected. But a fair amount of my opponents could create some weakness with the queenside castle (although maybe it wouldn't have been like that if I had actually studied how to do the opening).

Oh man I do so much better playing on the computer with the cursor set at the fastest speed. 1800 on your phone is pretty good!
