The mind recognizes patterns in both formats. In three dimensions, there is more detail to be processed. How this affects the mind is unclear. As previously stated, the mind can adapt to either format. Perhaps the greater detail helps the mind to cement the patterns. Perhaps the mind is slowed that much more, however miniscule, when calculating. Perhaps the third dimension causes another part of the brain to join in during calculation, making it actually more effective. Not sure what kind of studies have been done, but I'm pretty sure most top masters these days are playing and studying in both formats. My guess is the majority is in 2d since databases of games and online play abound in this format. Would be interesting to ask a master who plays in OTB tournaments regularly if they have some sort of ritual or practice they use to reaclimate to three dimensions before they begin a tournament. Good topic!
2D vs 3D

I wish this website had an option for turning your board to a 3D board then your opponent could play 2D and you 3D it would make my rating go sky high.

There is a 3d mode indeed, and for the app I turned it on to improve my boardviewskill (is that a word?). Ive noticed that my game is online alot better and thought it may be the different view of 2D vs 3D. Also stopped using the analyze tool. (ok still in some important games I use it)

Yes, but can you do that on the iPhone app?
on the android you can, so I guess iPhone too. Must be in the left screen with all the options.

@ElKitch: Not sure about iphone or android apps, I was just using Chrome and accessing the settings in live chess. The option is displayed to use the 3d board, but when I clicked on it, it said only premium members could use the feature.

I agree with mrwrangler..... I make stupid mistakes and miss tactical shots whenever I play 3D chess

Since I've become a paying member I love the 3D the board now.
I've made a thread about 2D vs. 3D myself at one point. Hardly anybody I know plays chess that's why I play it online so much and 2D became the norm'.
I must admit, online, 3D pieces on a pure 2D board does look a bit awkward but you get used to it. I'm loving the 3D Staunton men :)

If you buy a square off board, you can play 3d while your opponent plays 2d.
The only problem is that the pieces move slow-ish, so your opponent gets more time than you do. Supposedly their Neo and Swap boards move faster, but they aren't available to the general public at this time.
I have a major issue,
Using a 2D board on a computer I find it very difficult to beat people with as low of a rating as 700. I make many mistakes that I would never make using a 3D board.
Using a 3D board whether on the computer (I actually don't mind it) or in real life I am a much better chess player. My mind just does not register moves with 2D boards and I don't make any good moves.
