The problem with the version of three way chess that I have played is that you can't really trade material successfully, because the third player ends up ahead. You tend, therefore, to get fairly cagey, defensive games. That said, I would certainly have a go if it did appear!
3-way chess
Interesting. So can you use another player's pieces. Like queen attacking king backed by a rook on 3rd player's team. (and if they are cooperating they wont take queen :))

... until they perceive that you are going to beat them to the checkmate and win, at which point you lose your queen! It has great potential, doesn't it!

I'd imagine that in a serious game, the two weaker players would make an alliance to take out the stronger one first, and then have at it amongst themselves.

I own a zellers four way chess set which I have yet to use. The fifteen dollars I paid for it was almost worth it simply for all the nice sized, multi colour plastic pieces which were included.

The game ends with the first checkmate, so there is one winner and two losers. I can imagine alliances forming, but they would be fragile, because there is no prize for helping someone else to win.

You think you are joking about 3D chess! I have a set; it is three boards in a vertical column, and the pieces on the middle board all have 3D moves that they can do. The aim is to either checkmate the King (middle board) or take both Princes (outer board equivelants to the King). It is just a little crazy, not least the knight equivelant which moves 3:2:1 as opposed to the usual 2:1. Great game.
I was wondering what peoples thoughts were on three way chess?? I think it would be a neat addition to this, already good sight.
