30 Min Games

For a while now, I have been playing a roughly even mix of turn-based games and 10 min games.  I like both.  Turn-based alows exploration of higher level play while 10 min games help train the mind to think faster and without the aid of the analysis board.  However, my achilles heel has been the blunder.  I seem to get through most openings in decent shape, occaisionally falling for an openning trap, but my downfall is usually a mid or end game blunder.  Even in turn-based games, i make such blunders because the analysis board only helps with what you see.  You cannot analyze what you do not see.

I am finding, though, that the 10 min games are not helping me with the ability to see more.  Lately, I have tried a few 30 min games and I think these are helping me more since I have more time to think.

So, I guess my observation, is that the combination of turn-based and live games is a good principle for game development, but you have to find the right time control to develop the skills you want to develop.  In my case, I think 10 min is too fast for my current skill level.  I have played a few 30 min games lately and I feel much more like I am playing real chess as opposed to "who can move fast and avoid a fatal blunder".

At a higher level, 10 min probably seems slow and real chess games can be played.  But slow is a relative term and 10 min is too fast for me now.

My turn-based rating is in the 1600s and my blitz and standard live ratings are around 1300.  So, my idea is that when my standard live rating approaches my turn-based rating, that will be an indication that I am ready to move from 30 min standard live games back to 10 min blitz games.  And if I am able to get my Blitz rating playing 10 min games up near my turn-based rating, then I will be ready to try 5 min games.

Anybody have any similar experiences?

Everyone's different, I guess. For me, live chess "long" (30 min) was still way too fast. For decades, I was used to OTB format 2 hours/40 moves (with another 60 minutes after the time control). However, nobody (including me) wants to do this at the computer. I'm now playing turn-based "OTB-style" i.e. without any help of the analysis board and opening databases. I love it so far! Blitz is not for me because what makes chess fun (IMO) is the part where you think long and hard. The only thing detrimental is that I take longer than the usual 3 hours for my games. So if I ever go back to real OTB, I will most definitely have problems with Zeitnot.

Yes, indeed.  Everybody is different.  I have a hard time keeping more than a few minutes of analysis in my head long enough to process what I have analyzed.  I am not sure that longer than 30 minutes would result in my making better moves.

I have just started to play 30 min games so my rating has not settled into a stable level.  It will probably take a few weeks to play enough games to see where I land.  I will make another post with my results in a few weeks.

How easily do you seem to find opponents for 30 min games?

Sorg67

I have played six 30 min games in the last two days and have not had any difficulty finding a game.  I suspect that it will become more difficult as my rating goes up since I do not think many higher rated players play that time control.  I am an in the 1300s at the moment.

Since I started my experiment, I have played nine 30 minute games and one 15/10 game.  I like the 15/10 time control a little better.  It works out to about a 20 minute game for a 30 move game but gives you enough extra time to finish out a won position even if it takes 60 moves or more.  But either 30 min or 15/10 seems to give me the time I am looking for but some of the opponents in the 30 min time control are painfully slow which makes it less enjoyable for me.

In these 10 games, I have won 8 lost 1 and tied 1 and my rating is up to 1412.  Not sure that really means anything, it seems that many of my opponents are slow which you would expect at that time control.  I one of the games I won, I was losing and won on time.

Computer analysis of the games shows several blunders on each side.  Initially, it seems more blunders than turn-based and fewer than blitz as one might expect.

So far I feel like I am making better moves than in blitz games, not sure yet if the overall quality of the games is better.

Lost a few 15/10s - not sure if I faced better opponents or just did not play well.  Have played a few 10s as well and I feel like I a losing my rhythm.  When you play a slower time control, you have to learn to adjust your move analysis process accordingly, otherwise you are making the same quality moves as in a faster time control, just playing against opponents who are making better moves.

Sorg67

Not going well in the slow games.  Not enough patience.  Have to be in the right frame of mind to study each move as carefully as you have time for in the slow games.

30 minute chess is far more Benificial to any player. Bilitz chess encourages mistakes, and should be outlawed.

Blitz chess will not make a good chess player.Chess was never meant to be played at this speed .Look at all the wonderful collections of great chess players and you will find brilliant combinations which are impossible to find in Blitz. If you want to make silly mistakes and learn nothing, then continue with Blitz.

Go to the live game console.

Click the 'Games' tab in the lower right-hand corner.

It will fill with games. Click on the 'Time' column and it will sort them with the longest games first. Find a game and click 'View'.

thank you kleelof .

E_gr_esS

wow when you click on time it takes forever to sort. is this normal?

kleelof

It usually only takes a few seconds. Perhaps you did it at an exceptionally busy time.

I just tried it an it took less than 2 seconds.
