Has anyone seen this bench and board?  Ever played in such a setup?

Yes actually!! 3 days ago in Budapest at the fisherman's bastion, the guy ont the left owns the board, i believe he is hungarian. So it's a 5x6 board, meaning that you can't go in diagonal from one corner to an other (it's a bit confusing). But the game is actually super interesting, the pawns can promote way faster than on a regular board, so they're worth more than usual. It's easy to over-estimate your position but its quite fun. We played for like 1 hour, it was pretty interesting, the guy told me he has had a maximum rating of 2270 in his life, so he is quite strong. If you wanna play against him, consider coming to Budapest ahah happy.png

Chess.com should make a variant of that!

I love how an old (comment-less) thread pops back to life!  So, just one of each back-rank piece!  Interesting, as well, that "white on the right" regarding board orientation does not hold here!  And, always opposite colored bishops!  How are the pieces laid out to start, from right to left?

Looks a bit congested, how about one more file, make it 6x6. Looks interesting. Engine gives it 0,0 to start with, so actually 'more fair' than the regular set up (on an 8x8 board to be honest, not able to define 6x6 in an engine). I've seen a 6x6 set up online, but that one had only knights for white and only bishops for black, or the other way around, can't remember, but I didn't fancy that.

Edit: Hmm, FEN doesn't seem to copy well, but I tried to insert a position starting with a line up of (left to right) R-N-K-Q-B-R plus 6 pawns (and of course black mirrored on the other side).

I like mine with 80

So, you have introduced two new pieces.  The shape of the piece on e1 seems to indicate it's a rook-knight combination.  Correct?  Cannot clearly see the piece on g1 ... what's its linage?  Beautiful board, by the way!
