RULES FOR CLASSIC 4-PLAYER CHESS
The game is played by two 2-person teams, brown and black versus red and blue. Before starting, the players should decide whether teammates will be allowed to give each other advice during the game.
SET UPTeammates set up and sit opposite each other, as follows:
BLACK (TEAM 1) | ||
RED(TEAM 2) | ccctMvLwVmTcccOoOoOoOocccc+c+c+c+rP + + + + +pRNp+ + + + +cPnbP + + + + +pBQp+ + + + +cPkkP + + + + +pQBp+ + + + +cPbnP + + + + +pNRp+ + + + +cPrccc+c+c+c+ccccoOoOoOoOcccTmVwLvMt | BLUE(TEAM 2) |
BROWN (TEAM 1) |
Note that all of the queens set up to the left of their respective kings.
OBJECT OF THE GAMEThe object of the game is to checkmate both players on the opposing team.
ORDER OF PLAYThe brown player moves first, and play then passes clockwise around the board, to red, black, and blue. A player whose king is currently checkmated loses his or her turn.
SPECIAL RULES
1. Except as noted below, all pieces move and capture as in standard two-player chess.
2. During your turn, you may only move your own pieces (not your teammate’s).
3. You may not capture your teammate’s pieces, even if doing so would help you.
4. Because of rule 3, your pieces do not give check to your teammate’s king—so it would be legal, for example, to move your king next to your teammate’s queen.
5. Your pawns move straight ahead, towards your teammate’s side of the board. If one of your pawns reaches your teammate’s back rank, it does not promote, but reverses direction and starts back towards your side of the board (mark it with a chip or a rubberband to show that it has turned around). Pawns capture diagonally forward, in whatever direction they are currently moving.
6. If your pawn’s movement is blocked by one of your teammate’s pawns, it may, as its move, leap over the blocking pawn to the square directly behind it:
+c+cOc+o+ | +o+cOc+c+ |
BEFORE | AFTER |
Note that (a) you may only leap over one pawn at a time this way, (b) it must be one of your teammate’s pawns, and (c) the square you leap to must be empty.
7. In order to promote, your pawn must reach one of your opponents’ back ranks. The only way to do this is by making multiple captures, so it won’t happen very often.
8. As in standard chess, pawns may move two squares on their initial move. A rook pawn on the third rank may make an en passant capture if the opponent’s rook pawn takes a double first move:
ccctMvccc+oOccco+crP + + Np+ +c | ccctMvccc+oOccco+cr+ P + Np+ +c | ccctMvccc+oOcccc+cr+o+ + Np+ +c |
Red’s rook pawn... | ...moves forward two spaces... | ...and black captures, en passant. |
9. A player who is checkmated is not out of the game, but loses his or her turn until the checkmate is lifted. While in checkmate, a player’s pieces are inert—they cannot be captured, and they do not threaten check.
10. If both players on a team are checkmated, they lose.
