do you think ADHD significantly affects the way a person plays chess?

I work with kids with ADHD and I use chess as a tool to develop their concentration skills.

I've seen this countless times, take a teen that can't focus or sit still long enough to put his name on a piece of paper, put him in front of of a chess board and he is suddenly focused and in the zone for an hour.

They suck at chess anyway but It's definately good for them.

One of the common ADD/ADHD characteristics is hyper-focus. This can be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on the circumstance. If directed constructively toward chess, it would be beneficial.

There was a South Park episode that dealt with ADD & ADHD & they had a pretty good solution for non drug treatment. They had an expert show them some techniques. Here's a brief (a minute or so) clip describing their solution.

thanks guys. i'm just curious because i myself might have ADHD. well, i don't know. but i often lose focus on the board. and not only on the board, even my friends say that i lose focus on things easily. i often lose because of this. bummer

I think I may have it also, it causes me to have trouble calculating so most of my games have to be handled based on positional considerations. Maybe someone should start an ADHD players group! Haha. Did anyone see that link in post #6? It works like magic.

That's good to hear and I've often thought that this would be good for young people with potential behaviour problems. The powers that be probably favour the pharmaceutical approach unfortunately.

I HAVE ADHD AND I PLAY CHESS IN THIS WEBSITE AS  I AM INTERESTED IN CHESS.ADHD  MAKE ME TO LOSE GAMES OFTEN BY MAKING ME TO LOSE FOCUS ON THE BOARD.DESPITE I TRIED MY BEST AND WON GAMES SUPERBLY .SOMETIMES IT GIVES ME HYPERFOCUS AND I WILL WIN EVEN A TOUGH PLAYER.MY RATING IS 1433 IN RAPID.SO LOSING GAMES DOESN'T MATTER .THE THING IS ADHD PERSONS NEED TO BE INTERESTED IN CHESS.THEY CAN DO EXCELLENTLY IF THEY HAVE INTEREST IN CHESS.SITTING AND PLAYING CHESS FOR AN HOUR ITSELF IS A GREAT ACHIEVEMENT

I have worked with kids with one or more of those acronyms.  Chess has helped some, and for others it hasnt helped.

When prescribed by a physician stimulants like Methylphenidate do help those afflicted with ADHD to improve their focus and concentration when performing mental tasks such as playing a game of chess.

I have ADHD, my chess is quite terrible. I try my best to improve, but I am quite slow at doing so. I definitely hang my queen on move 10 a lot! 😂😂

I think someone with ADHD will have trouble doing well in chess, simply because of concentration. Should be own classes, like the Paralympics.

i Have been suffering from A.D.H.D  symptoms were like

Not being able to focus (inattentiveness)
Being extremely active (hyperactivity)
Not being able to control behavior (impulsivity)

i have been struggling from years and have been finding a solution to it as i want to play give 100% in my chess games. Mental health is very important in terms of when you say you are a chess player.

A friend of my mind he is a doctor he suggest me some medicine to improve my mental illness.
