Kaynight your mind is a coconut. I hope you can make sense of that.

Saying the only people to abuse it are cheats and losers.  So by focusing on the supposed character of the players he forgets that the abuse can make the gameplay unfair and unfun (which is the main focus of people who set policy).

For example even if both players have 20 minutes left, an abuser can take a 5 minute break to help them figure out a critical position.  Of course with speed games the problem is much worse.

Manic, you really don't think it's a problem that one person can purposely disconnect to get an extra 5 minutes more than the other person?

no, if they disconnect they can't see the board anymore

Experienced players can easily remember the position (and the whole game for that matter).

But also it's very simple to copy and paste the image before you disconnect.

Its takes time to memorize the board

Just disconnect from the internet, don´t close the browser.

You will be still seeing the board.

Hi. When disconnected the clock should pause. It's insane to loose games because of a 1min disconnection when playing for 40 minutes and you are totally winning!! Is it soooo didicult to pause the clock while at the same time run a different clock for the 5 minutes return??? What do you think? And if a staff member could also answer would be great..

Yes, and you don't want to lose them either.

Here's a more practical and simple solution to it all:

If your opponent disconnects, someone from Chess.com, probably that Erik guy, will go to your opponents home to ensure there is an internet connection issue.

If it is determined there is a connection problem, the C.C staff member, probably that Erik guy again, will debug the connection. If no solution can be found, they will provide a stable connection to allow the game to finish.

In this case, each player will receive an additional 2 minutes on their clock.

If, on the other hand, it turns out there is no connection issue, and your opponent is indeed stalling, the staff member, probably RonaldJ will beat them over the head repeatedly with a wet used athletic sock filled with hard boiled eggs.

In this case, you will be awarded the win, but RonaldJ will recieve the points for the game.

Ok?

Why should your opponent have to wait around twiddling his thumbs if your internet or computer (or both) are slow or crash?

I got pissed by my disconnection loss and i failed to see objectively two factors. Firstly and sadly, we have so many lame players in internet chess, that giving a free hand to them is not gonna be good, even for 5 minutes. Seconldy, i guess that from the 500 live games i've played, i've lost by disconnections about 10, so it's not a big deal.

I like your general idea. I upgraded my computer and have no more disconnect issues, but I used to. Besides hating to lose because of a disconnect I am sporting enough I hate to win because my opponent is having connection problems. I would suggest five minutes disconnect time for a 30 minute game and 2 or 3 minutes for a 15 minute game. If some moron wants to cheat against me by deliberately disconnecting for extra time, so be it.

I don't think the majority of people feel the same way as you.

patzermike

I think people overdo worrying about cheaters. Perhaps I am just lucky, but I have played here for about a year and the overwhelming majority of my opponents have been honorable and sporting. I usually play 15 minute games. Perhaps the poor sports are more common in blitz and bullet.

I suppose I haven't really run into these people that I've heard so much about either, and I also don't play blitz or bullet.

Thx..But the majority of people here go carzy in the thought of giving a free hand to cheaters..Kaynight couldn't even make sense of what i was proposing! Anyway as i said before it is not that a big deal, assuming you have a stable connection. Btw I liked your idea of 3 minutes disconnection time on 15min games.
