Just an idea I was considering was the introduction of a new piece to chess, The Empress, which would have the moves of the Queen and Knight combined. You wouldn't change the original games starting pieces and positions, but would only be able to obtain an Empress through pawn promotion and this would be the only piece a pawn upon reaching the end of the board could be promoted to, so in theory you could have 8 Empresses on the board. The new pieces power as well as being an asset could be a liability as far as stalemate is concerned, just a thought.
Also I was reading that back in the nineteenth century there was game where an player upon one of his pawns reaching the end of the board, promoted the pawn to a second king and this was legal? Which begs the question which King would his opponent have to checkmate?
