A pawn is worth more then what people treat it

I mean people say during games it is just a pawn that I lost for nothing even though it could be game changing.

Later in games the pawn is one of the most valuble piece on the board. Late game promotion wins games and pawns mean more then just a 1 point piece. They could end up being 9

That is why when you talk about piece (or pawn) value you speak of a relative value in a non-specific position. That's part of the art of chess, knowing when and why a specific piece is worth more or less, and what to do about it.

Pawns also are great at cornering more valuable pieces then itself in corners which helps you get rid of a attack or to just get more points

Pawns are stronger than rooks and queens:

but dont forget, if a pawn is gone, that means it would be a file available for the rook or bishops. its a long way to that winning endgame you are talking about and the one without pawn often have the better chances all the way up to that point.

not many games are decided by a simple pawnloss. i checked my last 10 games and not a single game was decided by a onepawnloss. the one with activity won. i checked your last games and you have the same result:) its not as often as one would think

The pawns are the ground troops, the pathfinders, the guys who make the trenches, the first line of defence.  They are incorrectly considered to be the sacrificial lamb of the Chessboard by the masses, the weakest piece on the board.

All pieces have their strengths and weaknesses.

Pawns may not be the most powerful but I think collectively they are the most productive piece.

They say a pawn on the seventh rank is worth a rook; and I generally reckon a passed pawn on the sixth is often worth a minor piece - but that just me Smile

When I am a pawn down ( with no compensation ) against a class player I dont worry much at all, against players 2000-2200, I am a bit more worried, against players 2200-2400 I am looking for good reasons NOT to resign and against players over 2400 I usually resign. The strength of one's opponent counts for a lot indeed ! I had a similar discussion with GM Kevin Spraggett and found his words very memorable. He said that in his experience when he had a bad position against players 2400-2500 he figured he would get a couple of chances to get back in the game, against 2500-2600 he said maybe only one chance and against players over 2600 he said his bad position only gets worse !  Wink
