Abusive players and time rundown

Hiya. I’ve never posted before but seeing as how I get no response when emailing support about this, I may as well voice it here.

There are a number of players who start verbally abusing you as soon as a game starts. I imagine this is some kind of strategy to put you off, but why is this tolerated? In online poker your chat is suspended for abuse so why not do the same here, it’s chess after all.

Second, why do so many players run their clocks down when their position is lost? This is a waste of their life and doesn’t help their situation. Is wasting my time really that important and is losing a game of chess such an affront to your ego that you can’t just resign?

On the issue of running down time, why not dock players ranking points when they do this? It’s easy enough to auto-calc when a player is doing it. As a paying member I find it pretty unfair that a free member is entitled to waste my time.

If you don't care for someone's talking, just shut down chat during the game.

" As a paying member I find it pretty unfair that a free member is entitled to waste my time."    what do you propose -- change the laws of chess ?    you can not force anyone to resign.    it is their right, as long as they have time on their clock, to play till check mate.

As MANY people have said on here before, your opponents are perfectly within their rights to use up all of their time. Beside that VERY obvious fact, your idea would dock them rating points completely unrelated to their chess skill. So that would make them underrated. Then when I go play that same player and lose to him I would lose more points than I should and now I'm punished.

People need to understand that ratings are simply a predictor of performance. They are not a badge of honor.

CavalryFC - the point is not that they use their time in the game, it’s that they disappear once the position is lost. In a 30 min game this is a huge waste of time and I can’t even start another asI have to wait. This results in always playing blitz games which is less conducive to learning the game.

I understand your frustration and your point. One reason I refuse 14 day / move games is I know this will happen. I will have a forced win and have to wait months to finish. That's why I don't do it. I rarely even play 30 min games for the same reason. As soon as you sign up to play these games you are agreeing to give that person 30 minutes of your time. It sucks but it's true.

And my bigger point was your idea for punishing them would artificially lower their rating thus impacting other users on the system. In fact, sandbaggers out there may actually use this to their advantage.

Americans are sullied beyond redemption by a man in charge if that's the simplistic blinkered approach you're taking

EdoubleU52

I was thinking the opposite. He is one of the least crass and vulgar of the folks I know from there. It's kind of uplifting..

EdoubleU52

Liam, not sure if you've noticed over the past couple hundred years, but the men in charge are usually Americans...

TomFinney1

was ghandhi American when India freed itself from Britain , was mandela American when south Africa threw away the racist policy of apartheid ,,,,?

TomFinney1

obviously edouble they were not, I get how americans think that they are the bees knees but I do think they sometimes are blinkered to the reality that many people not American have been statesmen on a world stage that have made a global difference

Even worst, some players are cheaters. They hack the game and make some things as “aborting” the game in a game already lost by them. I have reported it but get NO answers from support. Whats the meaning of playing against someone if you are a cheater??
EdoubleU52

@TomFinney1 ~~ Those are two great examples of statesman, true but here's something to think about. If Americans hadn't joined the allies in WWll, India would never have had its freedom, which by the way, wasn't due to Gandhi. Along with that, American influence was the main reason that Nelson Mandela wasn't hung for treason and allowed to live, enabling him to become the figurehead he was.

TomFinney1

good points , and I like how they reflect the fact we all share this world and can help even those far from us from persecution and tyranny

TomFinney1

btw I would also point out that the Indians rejection of the british raj , was mostly down to the mass mobilization of its inhabitants in a co ordinated campaign of peaceful non violent direct action and refusal to accept the commands of the british rulers rules

lets not take that amazing feat away from them as it was their actions that sent the brits packing

They’re abusing you to distract you. My strategy is to reply with nice/funny stuff which ends up distracting them. For example “hey idiot you’re gonna lose!” I just reply “that’s what my mam used to tell me! Great memories”
Running down the clock is annoying but you can skip back through the moves and do a bit of analysis while you wait.
You know there are a lot of awful people in the world you can choose to either be like them or rise above them.

@calanhorsman - No, that sort of abuse in chat isn't acceptable here on Chess.com - get a screenshot and report them, either later via Help --> Report Abuse --> Contact, or straight away by clicking on their popup profile --> More --> Report (the latter also allows you to block the person as you're reporting them). The Support team will investigate and keep you up to date with what actions are taken; email should be okay too, but it isn't as reliable as either of those methods.

@EdoubleU52 and @TomFinney1 - politics can't be discussed in the public forums; if you want to continue that discussion, please take it into a private club like Open Discussion.

Thanks,

Yes it does. For one, you get automatic vacation to kick in if you get low on time.
