The issue of whether a mechanical or computer malfunction could accidentally trigger a nuclear strike on Russia -- or them on the USA -- was kind of a hot topic in the mid 1960's, and still forms the basis of science fiction plots, most notably that of the backstory to The Terminator movies.
So, could this happen? Could a blown circuit still give a nuclear armed bomber the "go" code?
