Addium and chess. How will this new brain drug affect the chess world? Good bad or ugly?

My one thought was would they have to drug test people playing major tournaments? Lots of things to consider with the new "brain" drug..

EDIT - Oh "Addium" I thought you said Adderall. No idea what that is, but my comment is still relevant.

The use of ADHD-type medications is becoming a real concern for chess and competitive video games because it does provide noticeable improvement to concentration and clarity of thinking.

The debate has similar parallels to using Performance Enhancing Drugs in physical sports... but it does get trickier as you question whether you should ban someone from a competition who has a legitimate medical authorization.

On one hand, almost everyone will get a note because of the clear advantage... On the other hand, you could be depriving a really good player of an opportunity to perform because of a legitimate medical condition (which leads down another rabbit hole of debate)...

Drug tests are f-ed. Chess is not a sport. FIDE should stop all this nonsense and allow any drug use. There are so many things that improve cognitive ability so you think we can ban all of them?

the only advantage adderall gives is: more "cpu" time that the person's brain (with ADHD) provides toward thinking about each position--as opposed to splitting their "cpu" time on the several other annoying things that the brain keeps trying to focus on all at once while you are trying to play a game of chess. HOWEVER, Adderall DOES NOT increase cognitive ability. If you gave Adderall to the worlds best chess players who don't have ADHD, they wouldn't play any better than they already do.

As for physical sports, Adderall definitely provides an advantage because of its physically-stimulating effects--it allows your brain to push your muscles harder and longer than it normally would.

The drug is not Adderal. Stephen Hawking was talking of Addium, evidently the drug opens a lot more potential for the brain to work way past it's potential without it. I always hear we only use ten percent of our brain. This drug makes that percentage very very high. This drug has been the inspiration behind television show and movies evidently. I do not like the idead of it.

Ten-Percent-Use-of-the-Brain claims are false (e.g., https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ten_percent_of_the_brain_myth)

Which is not to dismiss Addium or Adderal, of course.

Better order a bunch and take advantage of it before the USCF or maybe even the FDA bans it.
