Advantage of chess on the Internet is purely convience if you have a family kids and not much time to get out and play or there's no chess club around chess online is always there.

Disadvantage: your at the mercy of people who relentlesly cheat with sophisticated engines and bots all day long chess online is just a pushing and shoving match with an anonymous bully who likes kicking sand in people's faces and trash talking in the chat box.

I'd rather play face to face chess with friends it's more fun and enjoyable.

kicking sand in people's faces is better thacheating with sophisticated engines

The commute is much better from my bedroom to my computer in the living room or office. It beats driving halfway across San Francisco through traffic and then probably struggling to find parking. I'd really like to play at the closest club to me, The Mechanics' Institute, which has many strong players and a great history, but it's really inconvenient for me to get down there.

Advantages of playing live would be more serious players, better discussion of the game afterwards, playing with a real board and pieces rather than a 2D representation, the added pleasure of watching other games in person (much more enjoyable than watching games online), maybe opportunities to find study and training partners.

yes ,playing live on real board is more sociable

I can play Chess, listen to music, sit in my underwear on my bed, have a blanket wrapped around me, all at the same time. No such thing possible in OTB.

You need to play in Portland sometime. anyone who is on this site that has played at Pioneer courthouse Square knows we migt actually get that type of behavior in the park all the time (though I must admit I thought the same thing when they had a naked bike ride in Portland as well: the people participating were also the ones you wanted to keep thir clothes on).

Seriously though, i miss OTB games as well but I am learning alot about openings and tactics in my Onine chess games as well.

I am learning alot about openings and tactics in my Onine chess games as you.

I have been playing for a year on line games and i did not find a single rude/cheating/ player (blitz is anothe story)...there is no single incovenient but (maybe) the 2D/3D vision...by the time i get to the candidates tournament (3D mostly) i will let you know the real diference...(Jacques Lacan  dixit)

I prefer to play online, because chess club where I go is full of kids who shout and talk, also when they are playing with you (I don't tolerate this), and who want matches longer than 15 minutes. I can't focus at chess club because I got distracted by screams and I don't learn anything by only playing 15 minutes matches. The only advantage is real board and 3d pieces.

Smoking in any open-to-the-public building is strictly forbidden in Germany, even if the owner would have no problem with it. It's pretty ridiculous.

Smoking is not allowed in Egypt in some places like trains , airoplains and other special places such as hosbitals .
