AGREE OR DISAGREE: Request for rematch is an attempt at...

When someone requests a rematch after playing on when down a rook, two bishops, and three pawns, however, I'm inclined to view it as slightly rude.  Or funny, I can't remember which one.

HankStamper

Why is this a question?   If you wish to accept or ask for a rematch, do so.  If not, don't.  I guess I just don't get the fuss here.

Your first pt about the opponent being more likely to use a chess engine is just an unverified OPINION, but you already knew that, right? I've often challenged players who beat me to a rematch and I've never used a chess engine in rematches or any other games I've played, period.

consummatum-est

I only do rematches if I lost to an opponent, and that he's the one who's offering a rematch.. I never offer a rematch against a person whom I just beat.. I think that's unnercessary..

"rubbing it in"???

I always refuse a rematch regardless if I win or lose... Why? Because

1. The guy is so upset at losing he's more likely to use a chess engine to help him with the next game...

2. If I lost genuinely, then there's something about that guy's techninque that is just hostile towards my style of play...

1. Sounds rather paranoid.

2. If his way of playing is "hostile towards" your style, then there is a hole in your style, and a rematch seems like a great opportunity to patch it up.

Disagree. A request for a rematch usually just means that your opponent would like a rematch

Yeah, sometimes a rematch is just a rematch, and I doubt if many players are using chess engines to get even in a rematch.  I mean, that person would probably have been using a chess engine all along, and, for most of us, while a loss is usually a real bite, it doesn't send many players into frenzied schemes for laying waste to an opponent by whatever means available.

I ask for a rematch when I made mistakes that were unnecessary, and I feel like I should've played a better game.
as in: I messed up, can we try another?
I only ask for one when I think the game would be interesting, so its closer to a compliment than an insult.
I don't see the big deal...

i say play rematch after rematch.  enjoy the games and learn from them.  get to know your opponent with a little chat now and then.  form a friendship with a person from a different culture using this common interest as a starting point.  enjoy some more rematches. repeat the process with other players.

Theoreticalboy.  I thought that was clear.

I almost always accept rematch challenges. One exception today: My opponent was rude enough to run the clock down for minutes (I had him in Mate in 1), instead of resigning. Then he challenged me to a rematch. Disgusted, I declined.

BobbyRaulMorphy

I've never asked for a rematch, just send out another seek.  I accept rematches about half the time.  I don't think it means anything.

About gg lol.  The other day I was trying to 'attack like Judit' Laughing and wound up giving all my pieces away and lost to a guy 300 points below me.  So I said 'gg'  like I always do when I lose to someone lower-rated.  Usually they just say thanks.  But this guy said 'yes' and that was all.  It was really funny.

bobbyDK

I would always accept a rematch. - why not. if I have the time.
I don't play for rating and if I play someone again or somebody else is basicly the same. rated or unrated.

J_Piper

Why are some people here threatened by a rematch request?  If a person wants another match, fine.  If you don't want to play the person again for whichever reason, there is no shame to tell them no, too.

johnsmyfav

the victor should never request a rematch, in any contest.  that is the priveledge of the defeated.  balancing color is nonsense, as the play over all opponents balances color.  to decline a rematch when a good game has been won can be construed to display poor sportsmanship, BUT NOT IF you offer to accept the rematch at another time.  you aren't required to fight on your opponent's schedule, or when you are tired.  you are entitled, and so is your opponent, to the same level playing field as the previous game.  rest and study are essential after any game to maximize the experience of that particular game.  playing another immediately isn't always wise.  Smile

I don't ask for rematches. I do accept rematch requests. I do so because:

1. If the opponent was worth playing once, he's worth playing again with the opposite colour.

2. He may feel that its only a 'match' if each player has a turn at the other colour. I'll respect that point of view by accepting a rematch.

3. He may have simply enjoyed the game and wish to play another with the opposite colour. Again, I'll oblige.

I never assume is motivation is revenge through engine use. If that's the case, his revenge is pretty hollow, since it was the engine that beat me and not the human player I faced in the first game.

In any case, chess here is a game played for enjoyment and love of the game. I will win some games, and lose some too. The losses I accept because I then go back to dissect it to determine where I went wrong and what I should have done differently. That's worth more to me than the lost rating points.

johnsmyfav

thank you for the the comment, i think.  but i don't know what "thread necro for the lose" means.

is that a comment? or a line of code from chess. com?

DiogenesDue

It means you resurrected a 3-year-old thread for no reason and everyone else in this thread is either long gone or has already considered this resolved long, long ago... ;)

Fwiw, I'd accept a rematch if and only if I were sure that the opponent is either interesting (beneficial to my development) or overrated.
