analog chess clock precise enough?

digital clocks are precise and everyone has the same time to the last second.
I've noticed that some analog chess clocks vary in speed and in addition to that some might set it to a second off so that the two opponents do not have the same time 100%. digital clock eliminates human error.
having 10 millisecond more than your opponent is an advantage.
in my opinion since time precision is so important analog chess clocks should be sent to museum of chess.
the only thing about digital clocks is that they have to be made easier to set and easier to give a player a minut extra.

First off, digital clocks are actually considered preferred equipment in the USCF.  In events where you bring your own clock, Black ordinarily has the right to use his clock, but if White has a digital and Black has an analog, White can insist on using the digital.  So you've got nothing to complain about.

I've never quite understood why they can't make an analog clock that gives you an exact start point.  (At least when you start on the hour.)  Of course, accuracy to the millisecond is less important when playing G/60 or longer.

And a final point:  How do you know your digital clock is really accurate to the millisecond?  I used to have a digital watch that would lose two seconds per day.

I agree that in blitz and bullet you should try to always have digital clocks. However in a game longer then G/60, a difference off miliseconds or even seconds is not very important anymore. Just walk a little bit faster to the toilet and you are even again.

@DavidMertz

Digital clocks are pretty accurate, If you have or had a watch that lost 2 seconds a day (I guess this was not an absolute constant) Then most likely your watchbattery and contacts are not perfectly connected. (Perhaps due to some moisture/filth).

The average blink of an eye is 300 to 400 milliseconds. 10 milliseconds doesn't sound like much of an advantage.

Analog chess clocks are often out of sync= and make funny noises. Also, one can shake off the flag via shaking the clockor banging upon it energetically. Good old times... Laughing

I hate when people use them in my OTB games. I can never read the stupid things.

I just found out that they are better than digital clocks when you  teach. I introduced my students to digital clock but in the first week they did not get used to pressing the clock after making a move. On the next session I brought mechanical clocks. That tick-tack noise actually kind a warned them about the time and one of them actually told me this.

Digital clocks were actually brought into tournament scene not for their accuracy but for their ability to offer incremental. I am kind of old fashioned but a player should be able to manage his/her time without the assistance of time controls. At this age when most of us think ourselves to be enviromental sensitive, I wonder what will happen to those mechanical clocks.
