analysis board

Just wondering what people think of the analysis board. I find that it helps me find much better combinations and moves than perhaps i otherwise would but is it hindering the development of my calculating ability? Or is that outweighed by the fact that it is improving my game. Do most players use it? Has anyone played otb since playing here and found it has ruined them?

Cheers

As I've said elsewhere...

- It shouldn't show you where your future, planned moves are, in fact, illegal.

- It should allow you to back up 2-3 moves in a given game and experiment with an alternate what-if-I'd-done-this-instead line.

It would also be nice if the material shown on the 'Details' tab kept pace to show the pieces taken during analysis lines.

As to the question of whether or not it causes long-term brain damage, I think the key is not to get lazy.  Use your powers of visualization & calculation first, and if the position warrants it, use the AB to check your work.  It also helps to keep playing regular OTB chess.

i think that there should be an option button which allows you to disable the analysis board. i have never used it during a game and i do not plan to use it ever. i believe when my opponent  uses the analysis board  he has a greater advantage especially if our rating are similar.

So... You want a button that disables your opponent's analysis board?  Smile

very interesting  commments about the possible negative aspects of the analysis board.  I think I may start playing some games without using it.

After I learned about the analysis board, my rating certainly increased.

I do sometimes get concerned that it negatively affects my chess calculating abilities, though.

The analysis board is a narcotic drug... and i am junkie.

when i started here, i didn't know it existed...

now i play against myself on the analysis board during online play more than i play others.

i'm glad Analysis Boards don't exist in the real world.

How on Earth is it hindering your calculating ability?  The better you can analyze a position slowly, the better you can analyze it quickly. I could see how it could hurt your game if you no longer play otb. Just make sure to continue playing otb and I think this slow, complete thought process should help your game.

A Board is useful but probably wont help your OTB games

I can see how the AB could help some players but hinder others; I know that I do try to calculate to the best of my ability without the AB, partially because I'm usually on an older computer that can't handle both AB and real board at the same time and so opening the AB on the computer I use most often (though not the only one I use) locks up the main game window so badly that even Ctrl+Alt+Del doesn't work.  Actually, sometimes I avoid making moves on certain games until I have a chance to use a computer that can handle the AB.  I think the AB may actually benefit me when I use it to calculate out farther than I could without it-I'm learning to calculate out farther and using it as "training wheels" as I learn.

However, I can also see how it could hinder a player who uses it to perform calculations which he could otherwise do in his head.

Also remember:  This is the equivalent of correspondence chess, and when people play correspondence chess through regular mail, they often use a real board and pieces to work out the best move (whether this was an inspiration for the AB I don't know, but it is basically the same).
