A book is rarely, if ever free unless it is written by amateurs whose materials did not convince publishers. In the case of published materials, the writter deserves a compensation for the time and ressources put into his works. Him and everyone else involved in the process of making this book a reality have to be renumerated.

If you want access to 'free' books, you should subscribe to your local library, it's usually free of cost for it is paid by tax payers dollars. There you might find quite a few chess book titles and in paper besides, which is much better than electronic.

I stumbled upon a site where one can download many chess books free.  I don't know how legit the site is so I won't post it here but books such as "Chess Opening Essentials," "Fundamental Chess Openings," "Teach Yourself Visually Chess" among many others can be found there.  I'm not sure if they have an agreement with the publishers to allow a limited number of downloads or what but it seems to be a legitimate site.  The only problem is I'm from the old school and much prefer to have a physical book in hand.  I never read online books.

Execpt for the fact that copyright is of limited duration in most jurisdictions (though not as limited as it should be).

You can find a number of older, still useful books, that are now in the public domain that can be obtained for free, legally.

Go to Google Play and search the books on chess, sort by free. You can find Capablanca, Emmanuel and Edward Lasker, Staunton and others, along with lesser known writers.

You can also find some on the Project Gutenberg site: http://www.gutenberg.org

Some books though are ludicrously overpriced (mostly because they're out of print).  Baburin's book on the isolated queen pawn for example fetches $85.00 on Amazon.
