You can play Black as White. 1.d3 2.d4
That said, I love me some mainline KID
Uhm yea that is a really bad basis rep. Just putting in my opinion. The budapest is sometimes used to just swap off pieces especially the fajarowitz(spell check). The scandanavian does nothing to challenge the center or ease development.
Personally i prefer playing white because i simply enjoy the fight for an advantage. My results are also better as white.
Just an example, My first tournament repertorie was the queens gambit, caro kann, and the budapest. Now here i am finally breaking out of the amateur egg shell in my opinion and im learning 1.e4 and 1...e5 because i realize im missing a lot of valuable basics to the game.
If you really enjoy the Scandinavian, Budapest and Icelandic, then you have started learning chess in a really bad way.
Could you be a bit more specific please?
I am beginning to learn and appreciate the French defence, but I don't see what is outright wrong with the Scandanavian, Budapest and Icelandic?
They are all legitimate openings, and whilst I'm sure beatable for those who are high ranking and play White, I'm still not seeing what is actually wrong with playing them?
as mentioned before, your repertoire is unsound-ish, or dubious. However I play sound openings, (dragon, KID), and I find it is easier to play with Black by far.
As White it is harder to find an opening I enjoy playing.
What is not being explained to you is that almost all openings result in 6 characteristic pawn structures:
1. Open pawn formation
2. Half-Open pawn formation
a. Ram pawn formation
b. Jump pawn formation
3. Free Pawn formation
4. Closed Pawn formation
5. Half-Closed Pawn formation
6. Hybrid Pawn formation
Classical openings result in pawn formations where the potential "pawn breaks" are evident. Which one(s) you use to get your Rs into the 7th rank depends on how your opponent chooses to defend.
Non-classical chess openings like the ones you are choosing result mostly in Free Pawn Formations. This is the pawn structure where no pawns have crossed the midline of the board. And, the pawns have not made contact in the form of "levers" or "rams". Because of this the pawn structure does not have any evident "pawn breaks". Therefore there is another layer of strategic pawn play involved in arriving at pawn structures where the "pawn breaks" are finally evident.
In my opinion, preferring Black over White is a sign of weakness. White undoubtedly usually has some sort of advantage in almost every single opening. So why don't we all want to play White? Because of fear. It is easy to become afraid of studying so many of the different lines Black can choose from, it is much easier to play our typically set-up as Black. The world's greatest chess players have studied from the White side very much; again, if White has the advantage, take advantage of it. It is important to get over any fear that may hold you back, this advice pertains to many other things besides chess as well.
There is nothing wrong with this, but as one becomes more and more competitive, looking to make money, to have White is most advantageous.
Yes, you are right. There is an advantage in getting a clue from White's first move. But white can make a move that is so flexible that Black is faced with having to equalize. Example 1.Nf3
Actually, I find Black can attack easier in openings such as the Dragon.
White is not an advantage at all. It is more of a hinderance, as players start to look for advantages, and play for wins even though they dont exist!
Why? Because of the old rule "win with White, draw with Black".
Nowadays, players are looking to win with either colour, so whoever goes first is not much of a deal really. All you need is a solid opening foundation, and good chess ablity to win.
Black has the advantage in getting a clue from White's first move but then after Black has made his response then White has the advantage because he received a clue from Black's response.
DaBigOne has another good point, some players are a little too aggressive as white, and a skilled defensive player can use this to turn the tables.
I don't think being black is a disadvantage, but i think that if your white, you get to choose the 'style' of the game.
some openings are better as black such as siclian which is much better than english and french however white does have a slight advantage but regardless of which side you play if you win as either side you are better so it doesn't effect too much
I do not prefer Black as, for example at the fifth and last round of a five round tournament if I have had 2 whites and 2 blacks--much rather be paired with the white pieces.
However those who want to aspire to say expert or master should try and have a repertoire for Black which gives good winning chances. Even in correspondence chess where many play for the draw with Black--I think it is ok to play for the win....
Hey everyone.
I was just wondering if anyone else finds it more enjoyable to play as Black than as White?
I have only been playing a couple of months but I have already found 4 openings for Black that I thoroughly enjoy regardless of win/lose/draw (Scandanavian, Budapest, Icelandic and French).
All these games and their various lines are really enjoyable for me, but when I play as White I haven't been able to settle on an opening that is fun to play. Openings like the Ruy Lopez, Italian Game and Vienna Game aren't really very ejoyable for me.
Also, I find that I prefer to respond as Black than take the initiative with White, because alot of my openings with Black simply steal the initiative anyway when you think about it.
For Example:
Another Example (my fav):
Now, those are only two quick examples, but for me, they show how Black can very quickly challenge White's initiative, and regardless of how things are played, you are entering lines that Black has chosen, in this case the French or Scandanavian.
One final thought is that I am able to feel more satisfaction from a draw as Black due to the hypothetical small disadvantage that results from having to move second.
When I get a draw with White I sometimes feel like I messed up and should have played better and won outright rather than settling for a simple draw. Like I said, with Black I feel satisfaction from having drawn with White despite my disadvantage so its a two for one as winning or drawing feels good with Black for me.
So, that was a long way of asking, does anyone else prefer to play Black?
(Also its great in offline games when you can offer to let your opponent play White and they think your being generous, but really you want to play black all along lol.)
