Anyone wanna share their stories with toxic chess players and bad sports?

Just interesting to read stories! Mine wasn't even on chess.com. I was at a hotel with my friends and to my right where we were sitting there was a giant chess board where a father was playing his two sons who I am guessing were young adults. I had kinda watched the game and analyzed it with my friend and we kinda joked around when the father (who was very edgy and walked around with his hands behind his back and moved the pieces with his feet) made a bad move we would always think of a better move. After a while, one of the sons left and it was only one playing the father. I had kinda lost track of the game and was talking with my friends when I glanced over and saw that the son still had two rooks while the father was missing both and only had a bishop. I thought that the son had it in the bag and thought that the winner was clear. I looked over a while later to see that both of the rooks were gone and he only had a bishop. The father was pushing up two pawns with a king in the middle and I thought it was over for the son. The pawns on the board were easy to mistake for bishops and the father pushed his left pawn up out of the reach of his king and was able to be captured by the son's king. Once the son took it the father started claiming that the pawn could not be taken because the pawn (Which he initially thought was a bishop while moving the pawn up) and tried to take it back. At first it seemed like a joke but then he started being really aggressive and making up a different story for what actually happened. He took the pawn back and continued the push till one of the pawns got promoted and the son lost. I think that if the pawn was taken as it should have the son could have managed a draw and avoided the teasing of a cocky dad after a game. Even if the father's win was inevitable at that point still he was a bad sport to losing a piece.

Yes! I had a game with this guy from USA and I did a check which forces him to reveal his queen to the attack. The game was set to 1 hour each. He didn't make the move and told me "Enjoy sitting there for 1 hour". I waited couple of mins to see if he changes his mind but he didn't. Then I left my PC idle and after I'm gone, he has made a move. The game eventually timed out and I lost the game since it was my turn to move.

i have a story of some folks on chess.com who defamed and framed me (and some other innocent players too) because they are full of envy and prejudice...those typical losers who like to roast high accuracies

I have a great one for you guys.  It was at the 2006 West Virginia State Championship.  Since I cannot mention names, here is the Crosstable:

US Chess MSA - Cross Table for 2006 WEST VIRGINIA STATE CHAMPIONSH (Event 200609046811)

I am row 4 in the cross table.  So I had 2 wins and 2 draws going into Round 5.  In round 5, I face the bleeping a-hole in row 7 of the cross table.  So I noticed that the player (a-hole is more like it) that I faced in round 5 was one of those that tries to pay close attention to what people play, and prepare for you.  Well, it was figured out the night before that I was getting White against him round 5 (I had BWBB thus far, so I had to be White and got White both of the final 2 rounds).  Well, he saw me play 1.f4 in round 2.  I had played the Antoshin that round (f4, Nf3, d3, c3, Qc2).  I knew he would prep for that.  I still played 1.f4, but I didn't play the Antoshin, I believe I played the reverse classical, though it might have been the reverse stonewall.  His play was horrible, and I could see him fuming and getting furious.

Well, somewhere around 21 or 22 moves in, I have his Knight on f6 stuck in a fatal pin.  Attacked 4 times, only can be guarded 3 times - it is falling.  Cannot legally move either because it was pinned to the King.

He has 37 minutes left to make the first time control at 30 moves.  He sits and stalls, for no good reason.  With 16 minutes left, he walks up to the cross table, and fills in "1" and "0".  I mention to the director that he filled that in, and asked if that is an assumed resignation by Black?  He went and asked him, and he said no.  So he was told to erase the result.  He proceeds to sit until there are under 2 minutes left, and then makes a move and resigns once I take the knight with obsenities.

It gets worse.  In 2007, I am at the Southwest Virginia Open in Roanoke, and I proceed to arrive, and this same clown comes in, registers at the site, and he saw me.  He tells the director, pointing to me, "Do not pair me against him, I will kill him!"  We never faced not due to his request, but we never had similar scores except round 1 when we both had 0 of course going in.

Jesus Christ, take a loss like a man!  And if people know that you are prepping for them, of course they will deviate.  I played 1.f4 for most of 2006, but I played pretty much every line except maybe the Reversed Leningrad.  I know I played the Reversed Classical, Reversed Stonewall, and Antoshin, and usually it depended solely on Black's move order, and had nothing to do with my mood.  I believe, if memory serves me right, that I directly transposed into the Closed Sicilian if Black played a King's Indian setup.

But jeez, talk about a complete a-hole!

#1 that's an awful situation you witnessed, but is there anything bad you expirienced yourself? #2 well that sucks and story Im gonna tell is somewhat similar #4 some people just don't know how to take a loss #6 your opponent seems to have sone kind of ego issues

Arnaut10

I was lucky to never had bad situation while playing OTB since I never played a tournament and people I play chess OTB with are close family, friends or acquaintances (friends of my friends). Whatever is the outcome of the game, I try to be a good sport always. When I lose the game, I congratulate them on the win, everything else I avoid to comment until asked. When I win the game my opponents usually blame themselves and we just move on to the next game. Only "bad" experience I have was with my grandfather, who showed me how to play btw, who thought I cheated by moving my king when it wasn't my turn. I would never do that but I get why he was confused. I made a very early prophylaxis move after castling by moving my king to h1 which later proved to be very useful and he probably was too focused on his own moves to notice mine, thats why he missed it. This slight misunderstanding being the worst thing I experienced (OTB, not internet) proves you how easy it was for me to play and enjoy chess. If I ever encounter someone behaving poorly in a tournament where outcome of the game matters the most I don't know what my reaction would be.

That’s some real immature behaviour for an adult. Sure, losing hurts, nobody likes it, but you don’t have to be a di** about it.
I’m no chess pro by any stretch of the imagination, and my current chess level doesn’t compare to yours, guys. Still, I’ve played over 800 games on chess.com and not even once have I had negative experience with any of my opponents. I have indeed had some unpleasant messages a few times from people I haven’t even played against, mostly forum related, but never during a game. I know I’m tempting fate here, and my next post will probably be a good whine about trash talkers on CC

i did over 5000 games here now...and only 1 time an oppennent calling me bad words....so no need even to think abouthappy.png

once I was playing with black and then my opponent first refused to play with me cuz im black and then he proceeded to call me a cheater and aborted the game.

ChesswithGautham

I’m honestly lucky enough for nothing bad to happen to me. I also actually made some friends while playing.

Yeah this one time I when on a form in chess.com about a toxic dude asking to share toxic stories about other people.
Very strange
pds314

I've seen a fairly broken chess engine that would straight up caprure 3 pieces in one fluid motion by sliding its rook in a circle.

It's pretty hard to beat an engine they sometimes just straight up captures your king diagonally with a rook after taking your queen in a knight move (with a rook) the same turn.

Like, I'm pretty sure this thing would "beat" stockfish. Mostly because it seems to randomly play multiple moves in a row or cheat.

This is the loser technique, because he knew that you probably had better things to do than wait around for an hour for a single victory.  I sorta think they should limit the time per move too, like an hour game should have a 7 minute move clock or it's forfeit, or something like that.  This way you can still enjoy the slow play style, but not have to deal with tasteless hacks like that

Thanks for sharing the story. It was a fun read

That guy deserves to burn in H-E-DOUBLE HOCKEY STICKS for that dirty trick

I had an opponent sending me sleep and laughter emojis during the game, indicating that he was bored and amused at my conservative and defensive style of play. I sent a message back calling him a jerk. The conversation was contentious throughout the game.
The next day, I felt bad about calling him a jerk, regardless of what I thought of his behavior, so I sent him a message apologizing and explaining that my style was actually in response to his superior rating and the strong game he was playing. He never let me mount an attack, so I was on defense the whole time....by necessity more that choice. It almost worked too....we were down to a king, a knight and a few pawns each....a very even end game that I thought would be determined by the clock, which unfortunately caused me to rush a move and make a fatal error. But...he was the aggressor the whole game and I think he deserved the W.
Anyway, he sent me back a long and very friendly and congenial message, and I could see that he was really a nice person. I don't approve of his tactics in trying to distract me, but the positive conversation we had the next day was extremely gratifying and I'm so glad I reached out and learned what a good guy he really is.

Perhaps they had a bad day.

Had an opponent constantly swear at me in a locked forum;

when playing the game, I pulled a cool(but flawed) sac in 3 min which made them accuse me of cheating. I posted a forum about it, and they started swearing at me constantly on an alt
