Are any elite chess players on a ketogenic diet?

I did a DuckDuckGo search and couldn't find any mention of elite chess players who are on a ketogenic diet. There are a small number of long distance runners, bicyclists, and pro basketball players who are doing this. It would only make sense that some chess players are also doing this.

I bet theres a few as it does help with mental clarity and would definitely help in the longer time control games where you might get hungry or need a sugary drink to stay sharp.

I am nowhere near "elite" but i have been doing keto for 13 months.  It has made a positive difference in my life.

Geez, you're a tough scorekeeper!

I have tried keto diet with some variations. I have experienced positive effects in reducing my consumption of carbs (specially sugar), both physical, mental and emotional. But when try strictly keto it feels like i am entering a haze and my body slows down. Paleo works better for me, including my performance during slow chess games.

how about a steady diet of chess tactics instead?

Why does a diet have to be esoteric to be good? Or followed by celebrities?

Why not just a normal diet? Something really boring, you know, like someone with an actual medical degree might recommend instead of something you saw on Oprah.

One of the claimed benefits of a ketogenic diet is increased mental stamina and a decrease in "brain fog". I was just curious to know whether any top GMs were doing this to gain that added mental edge. (If any top GMs are doing this, they're under the news radar at the moment.)

BTW, there are numerous people with medical degrees who do recommend a keto diet. And no, I don't watch Oprah, or Dr Oz, or any of those crap TV shows.

I guess I mean an average doctor, not some 1 in a million doctor who is clearly against the consensus tongue.png

But ok. I don't know what ketogenic stuff is (Google says high fat low carb). If that's actually ok, then it's ok... but sounds like a fad diet to me, just saying.

you can merely fast before a tournament, i often do that.

How little do you eat and when?

The night before I'll have e.g. a lot of pasta. The day of the tournament I'll eat light meals, and between rounds I'll eat e.g. an apple and some nuts, or a salad. I've also tried nutrient shakes like spirutein.

Not sure what's good, I didn't put a lot of thought into this diet tongue.png It's just when I used to run, it was always a lot easier if my meal ~8 hours earlier was a lot of carbs, and just from experience eating small healthy snacks between rounds keeps the head clear.

What are the biggest differences between keto and paleo?

I guess you could say that keto is a bit of a fad right now. (I just saw a headline in a supermarket tabloid claiming that you can lose 17 pounds a week on a "keto smoothie" diet; Yeah, maybe the first week IF you start out at 600 pounds...)

But Keto has actually been around since the beginning of man. It's not far from the way people ate before the rise of industrial farming. Around the early 1980s, the U.S. "gubment" officially declared that people should eat less fat, ostensibly for better heart health. (This new guidance was based on terribly flawed studies by Ancel Keys. George McGovern was the politician who pushed the guidance through the government channels.) People fell in line with the official guidance and started eating less fat and more carbs. And now we are saddled with an explosion of people with diabetes, metabolic syndrome, cancer, Alzheimer's, and you name it. (I believe there's a connection.)

Preggo_Basashi

Before the rise of industrial farming, hmm.

I don't know much about it. In my imagination I assumed most cultures had some kind of carb staple like potatoes, rice, or bread even before industrial farming.

Don't Japanese people have more people living over 100 than any other nation? What do they eat? Rice and fish? I don't know, but that's carbs and a lean source of protein.

But again, this is just me guessing. As for 1980s US. Sure, maybe it was based on flawed science, but knocking one thing down rarely supports something else. For example if I came up with a crazy diet I could also cite George McGovern and rising rates of diabetes to promote it tongue.png
