Or generally esports players? ♟️ at a professional level*

Yes kinda right. For example Magnus carlsen.

He like football, badminton etc. But he is playing chess too.

Chess is a sport, but in no way are chess players athletes unless they also play badminton or rugby or …

Ooh this one should get lots of debate going haha.

I've always been on the "chess is not a sport" side.  According to Oxford dictionary an athlete is;

"A person who is proficient in sports and other forms of physical exercise."

So, I would say no, they are not an athlete because they compete at top level chess.  The average top level GM is probably athletic, but it's not chess that makes them so.

“a person who is proficient in sports and other forms of physical exercise.”

PHYSICAL EXERCISE

You could argue that the brain power they use and the pacing they do is physical! They burn so many calories!

You couuuuld... But sitting using your brain is obviously not what is ment by physical exercise.  happy.png

If a doctor told you, you needed physical exercise or you might die, would you sit and play chess as a form of physical exercise?  Certainly not!

If Carlsen plays badminton then he is an athlete for playing badminton not chess

Burning calories =/ Physical Exercise.

Sitting down is considered physical exercise now? Crazy.

Physical exercise is physical exercise. Burning calories is not physical exercise. People burn calories if they're execessively worried or if their metabolism is out of control, just by sitting down.

Worrying and sitting. Now there are two sports in which I can excel! 😉

Of course chess players are not athletes! What kind of a question even is this?

But, I guess it's 2022... All of these chess hermits now decide chess is a "sport" and think they're an "athlete" just to make themselves feel good! surprise.png

But we all know chess is NOT a sport. It's a game; nothing more, nothing less.

Of course people who don't play sports would think chess is a sport. But they're simply incorrect. Chess is a game; if chess is a sport, then everything is a sport. Monopoly is a sport... Watching TV is a sport... See what I mean?

There's sports like football, baseball, and tennis. They all require actual PHYSICAL skill. Chess is a game based solely upon brainpower. Sure, it's fun and competitive, but it should never be considered a sport.

While some may argue that chess is recognized as a "sport" by the Olympic Committee, then why is it not a "sport" in the Olympics? See what I mean? It's just a game. A VERY OVERRATED game in many countries.

In conclusion, the complete lack of PHYSICAL SKILL invalidates the argument that chess is a sport. It's a COMPETITIVE GAME at best.
