No. I don't think any single hobby (or profession if chess if that for someone) should define someone. Being a chess player doesn't make you awkward; it is just that some awkward people play chess grin.png

This is probably true for most things though; maybe chess players are too often misunderstood by non-chess players is a better version of this observation because the game of chess is so deep and complex that non-chess players can't relate on the same level as chess players when discussing the game.

UpcommingGM

No. I don't think so.

This does not help the case that chess players are not awkward 😝

They probably just have something more private to add to the topic, or are naturally more introverted; this doesn't make them awkward by default, but okay grin.png grin.png grin.png

PurpleGM12

Not really, anyone can be awkward 🙂

Divyaujjwal

They aren't

All sorts of different personality types play chess but chess clubs are more accepting of socially awkward people. In fact, they expect them to turn up (& play for the 1st team)! grin

Please check your messages , I have replied to this topic.

I think many players who played ambitiously since childhood have skipped a few parties and this might have affected their social development to some degree.

This is about as silly a question as "are chess players athletes"...and the answer is, Yes to awkward and No to athlete...

More likely and yes, respectively. Never figured out the small talk thing, though could fake it for roughly 3-4 minutes if the other person does all the talking. You realize maybe you are the one who is off when you realize nobody else wants to stare at a checkered board and figurines endlessly or debate volatile topics like politics, sports teams’/players’ legacies, religion, and whether there is any benefit of a sub-1200 lever player to study anything other than tactics. Seems like most non-awkwards are great at over-enthusiastically engaging other humans by means of neutral mundane topics.
