Chess Repertoire: Nice idea, but needs better implementation.

  • Chess Repertoire has 52 varieties of opening sets. 16 for white (1.e4, etc.) and 36 for black (Queen's Gambit Declined, etc.)
  • The board is fixed in portrait mode only. It does not rotate into landscape mode.

  • Each move highlights only the final square, not where the piece originated from. This makes it difficult to follow.

  • On my Samsung Note 8, Android version 4.4.2, the app crashed a lot (tried to open a closed sqlite database).

Here is the cost for each level of play. Level one is always free and should keep you busy for a while.

Keep in mind there is a simple way to not spend too much money. If you decide to go to levels 2 and 3, do the following. After making a payment and studying one opening at level two, for example, the app is setup to allow you to trade in that set for another, and you don't have to make another payment. This will keep the cost down if you don't study too many higher level opening sets at the same time.

Level 1 is free for each set.
Each set has between 100 and 200 positions to study.

Level 2 is $1.21 for each set.
Each set has over 500 positions to study.
You would end up paying 52 x $1.21 = $62.92 for all sets.

Level 3 costs $2.46 for each set.
Each set has over 1500 positions to study.
You would end up paying 52 x $2.46 = $127.92 for all sets.
