Presuming that:
- Neither your king nor rook has previously moved
- There are no pieces between your king and rook
- Your king is not in check
- Your king would not be moving across or into a square attacked by an opponent's piece
You just move your king two squares to the left or right. The rook will automatically move to the right space.
If you did that and it wouldn't let you proceed, then you must have violated one of the conditions I mentioned.
