Auto-Resign Is Stupid, Cheats You of Your Time.

In every time control, there's always the possibility that you'll be cheated of your time.

Auto resign only happens when you don't make your first move in 30 seconds.  What are you doing at the beginning?

HorselessGunfighter

If your connection is bad, it's not possible to make your first move or any other within 30 seconds. Besides, it's not just your first move. It's happened to me several later moves. Sometimes, my connection is good, and auto-resign comes up. It's stupid in the first place, no one should cheated of their time. If you have five minutes, and the other side has five minutes, then what's the problem? Each side should have their allotted time.

Actually no - auto-resign is a big plus on Chess.com.  It makes the game much more enjoyable.  If you are having trouble I'm sorry, you may need to change internet providers to get a better connection.

Wait, why your connection takes more than 30 secs?

Are you alien living in Mars?

HorselessGunfighter

No, I'm not. I'm in China and unfortunately, China doesn't trust a lot of websites. So the last thing I need is stupid auto resign. And connection isn't is, because I can log onto other sites while I'm waiting for them to get their acts together.

The bottom line is this: Either I have the full flipping 15 minutes or I don't. Cheating me of my time is just asinine.

HorselessGunfighter

And it's not just me, I've noticed it happens to others as well. But they don't say anything about it, because it appears that they enjoy being kind to enemies. Fine then, that's on them. But if you have a certain amount of time, it should be "YOURS to USE", not some bonehead idea that automatically causes to lose for no reason. Hell, that's cheating for your opponents.

HorselessGunfighter

It's the main reason why I never pay for Chess.com and will never again, until that stupid auto-resign is gone.

I think China, Australia and other Asian countries will have a bit lag to connect to chess.com server in USA. However,  according to my exp,I can even play1 min bullet.

😂😎

HorselessGunfighter

Verylate is right, other Asian countries have experienced it also. And the funny thing is, that most of us multi-task, which means that while Chess.com says our connection is bad, it's pretty strange that our other connections are just fine.

How to turn off auto resign or auto abort?
HorselessGunfighter

Good question Postafi.

BadAmatuer

The website tries to address the issue of a player abandoning the game in a lost position and thus requiring the other player to just sit and watch the clock down in a game that should be resigned.  In my opinion, this is the main reason for auto-resign.

HorselessGunfighter

Hi BadAmatuer, I understand that, and lot of players who have ego problems would do exactly that, let their time run down. Unfortunately, some of us wouldn't do that, we're actually thinking. Not all of us are gifted tacticians, so we need a little time to think. If you're going to cheat someone out of their time, then don't act like it's a real time control. It's not.

Not in 1min

HorselessGunfighter

That might be true "Alltheusernamestaken", I never play 1 minute because it's garbage chess and full of mistakes, but I see your point. You're probably right.

If auto-resign is such a bad option, why hasn’t chess.com gotten rid of it all these years?
ChessinBlackandWhite

I know it is 30 sec for the first move, does anyone know what it is after that?

I think 30 sec is a bit fast for the first move in anything slower than 3 min. I think I would make it 20% of the time or 30 sec which ever is more, for the first move in each time control. and then 50% of the time at any point after that (applying to games (probably only makes sense for games of 10+ min)

In a 15 min game this would give you 3 min for move one which should be enough, and 7.5 min before resigning on any one move after that

Just to note in OTB chess for most time controls there are rules such as this in place also for rated chess, both at the beginning and during the game so it isnt just an online thing

HorselessGunfighter

I have no idea. I guess people like being cheated out of their time. Like I said, if you don't have the full time on the time control, then it's not a real time control.

ChessinBlackandWhite

That simply isnt true though. Unless you are also claiming that all Fide and USCF otb tournaments also dont use real time controls lol
