Becoming a CM

I know there is not a simple answer to this question but I’ll give some background. I am a 21 year old who is 1850 rapid on chess.com. Is it a realistic goal for me to become 2200 FIDE without having all that much time to study/play chess, like roughly 5 hours a week and even if I was able to study more am I still quite a ways away?
basixTheSwexiest
No it’s not a realistic goal. Hit the gym instead.

Looking at your stats, your puzzles rating is 1342. That indicates that your TRUE rating is much lower than 1800.

That doesn't look like a Master anytime soon.

You really don't have to be discouraging. His rapid rating is 1870, while yours is 844 as of now. Plus, to become a CM, you don't have to solve a whole bunch of puzzles in the tournament, you have to play games. So it really doesn't matter that his puzzle rating is low, he probably just didn't try.

Maybe I don’t do puzzles lol, just a thought

I wouldn't say it is realistic but maybe in a couple years you could reach 2100-2400+ on chess.com if you do you can 100% become a cm or nm

You can try but it depends how much board vision you have and how badly you want it and how good you are at chess

PromisingPawns

Do you have the financial strength to play tournaments all over Europe? If yes then there's that slightest of hope, otherwise no.

"Is it a realistic goal for me to become 2200 FIDE" ++ Yes

"without having all that much time to study/play chess" ++ No

Ping_booster
I have no idea but is CM better than a Grandmaster and what does CM stands for?
tygxc

@12

CM = Candidate Master = 2200
FM = FIDE Master = 2300
IM = International Master = 2400
GM = Grandmaster = 2500

My goal is to be an IM in 6 years.
Fetorenczi
I haven't played in FIDE yet, but no problem, i will do that, when i get ~1600 rating on chess.com

@14

"My goal is to be an IM in 6 years."
++ You are rated 1243
2400 - 1243 = 1157
1157 / 6 = 193
A progress of +193/year is hard to sustain.

Fetorenczi
I know, but I improved 500+ elo in last year. I am playing chess daily, and i get coaching from an IM. And i have platinum membership.

"I improved 500+ elo in last year"
++ You can reach 2000 in 1 year, but after that it becomes harder.

Fetorenczi
I can improve 2000-2400 in 5 years, don't you think?
tygxc

@19

"I can improve 2000-2400 in 5 years"
++ Yes, it is possible. Try to get 2000 in 1 year first.
Here is a real progress chart from 1171 to 2569 in 7 years.

Wow! But I don't think i can improve from 1243 to 2000 in one year. For this year, my goal is 1500. Maybe in 10 years IM is possible?

Keep working hard. You can always be the one exception
