Try playing a time setting with an increment, like 15 | 10 - that way you get at least ten seconds to make every move.
Beginner questions for time management

Consider playing at slower time controls. At slower time controls you have more time to think and build up good thinking habits and "reflexes" that will help you play quicker in fast games. I should take this advice myself ... but I won't. So if you want to stick to 10|0 games I understand and here are some ideas:
Make an effort to be almost always aware of how much time you have.
Think of seconds and minutes as pawns and major pieces. Sacrificing time is like sacrificing pieces (except you do it every move) ... is the resulting position worth it?
Figure out at what amount of time remaining you feel like you need to move fast. As you approach that time, begin to switch gears from slow thinking to fast thinking.
Develop a sense of how quickly you can physically makes moves when you need to move fast. Keep this in mind.
In some cases, don't agonize over how to avoid losing material. For example, if your bishop will be captured by a pawn on the next move, don't fret about it and just capture the pawn. You lose material, but you don't lose time. (Obviously, there might be good moves in a position like that, but if you can't find any in a certain amount of time, don't keep looking.)
Make use of pre-move for obvious or potential recaptures by your opponent and, depending on your comfort level, in some other circumstances as well.
Hi,
This account is pretty old, but that's because I played something like six games five years ago. I'm actually only a couple of weeks into being serious about learning chess, and the biggest thing I'm struggling with is managing my time. I've almost exclusively played the 10 minute format, and of the 180 games I've played there, I have, by my count, lost 21 games despite winning positions on board because I simply didn't manage my clock.
Are there any good tips for helping me overcome this? I mean, besides the obvious thing of just play faster
Thanks!
