Where I live, nobody has heard of chess. They prefer mouse racing! :-) I tried to get my partner interested in playing, but for some reason he gets pissed off when the chess machine beats him at level 3. I cannot understand why someone who hardly ever plays can get angry when they lose. What did they expect to happen? :-(
Best 20 chess cities in the world!
earlier this year I visited Melbourne Australia. The main library had a huge chess section with boards available on desks and loads of people playing. outside the library was a couple of giant sets again being well used. I could have stayed there for weeks - brilliant!

Some time ago in my city the Central park administration used to organise blitz tournaments the winners of which could get several free attraction passes as a prize. It was a lot of fun

Hey Spudnik, you're in the gravy!
St Louis is about 250 miles away at the other end of the state. And other than the chess, the place is a pit.

Pittsburgh, PA
Pittsburgh has a special place in my chess memories: my first tournament was there in 1970. As they say, you always remember your first one.

Wow, and there I was, thinking I'd meet you at the fair!
Fair is foul and foul is fair.
Hover through the fog and the Baudelaire!
over half of those are in police states... there is more to picking a place to live than whether the peasants are allowed to play chess.

Linares, Chile has nothing to do with chess, as far as I know.
Sorry, I meant Linares, Spain, but I wrote the wrong one

Funny you would say the best cities a chess fan would want to live in with India on the list. I don't think there is a city in India that comes close to being livable.
It's objectively incorrect to say that the country with the second highest population in the world isn't "livable"

Don't forget Arlington, VA, USA as well as any other city in Northern Virginia. Chess is really big there.

Just go by the studies. India is one of the most dangerous countries in the world, and has a low human development index.
