It's not a café, but Central Park has across the board chess matches in New York City.
Best chess cafe's in the world?

In Toronto there is a 'chess park' on Church street. On any given day you can find stockbrokers, construction workers, politicians and homeless people meeting across the chess boards.
Interestingly, a lot of high stakes gambling goes on.

interesting. the one in central park I played a guy who smoked a joint the entire time. he beat me too (I was worse then though, in my defense).

I never would gamble playing a politician, that's for sure.

ha ha
they say there are two sets of chess masters in the world.
The tournament masters trying to become famous,
and the street masters trying to remain anonymous.
there are homeless people that just can't be beat.

there are homeless people that just can't be beat.
Naturally. It makes perfect sense that instead of using their unbeatability to win millions in the world championship and other events that they would choose to remain homeless. It's all a matter of personal taste I suppose.

this is Joseph Smolij. He is in the guinness book of records as the world's fastest chess player. For years in Toronto he took on all comers for a dollar or two a game.
Look him up.

You can't even get his name right...
I'm currently looking at games that he lost...
As far as I can tell he wasn't even homeless. That means one of two things: he's not even famous enough for me to find out a huge fact such as that about him easily; he wasn't homeless...
I see no evidence that he was mad/insane as you say. See above again...
He played in tournaments...
Your whole argument was that these people chose not to be famous, yet you're claiming that this guy was famous enouh for me to look up? Whether he was or wasn't that's a lose lose for you...
I can go on...

angry guy,
First, Joe is in the record books for being the FASTEST player on earth. Not the most undefeated player. They say that even though he played 10-20 games an hour, he only lost every couple of weeks. He lost his job as a machinist for playing chess at work. And lived on and off the streets until he could be reunited with a family member when he was in his 90's.
my point was, that street chess can have huge amounts of money change hands. Many people who have never set foot in a chess club or tournament, make their living playing in parks. Even travelling from city to city and sharking.
Hence the anonymity.

Angry? About what? I enjoy mocking people like you. I have nothing to be angry about. Whatever "Joe" is/was/may/may not be in the record books for, you used him as an example as a homeless person who was unbeatable.
You're also now saying that Joe, the best example you have of an unbeatable hustler who as luck would have it also played countless games, is the epitome of somebody who could make huge amounts of money change hands. Sometimes even enough to pay for a roof over his head! Blimey... Rich bastard.

angry people mock people.
and if you would take a moment and learn to READ you will discover for yourself that you are incorrect.
if you will take a moment to remove your smug head from your ass you will look anonymity up in the dictionary. Then let us all know what youv'e learned.

You want me to look up a word that I know the definition of because you placed it meaninglessly at the end of one of your posts? That doesn't even make enough sense for me to mock. To use a chess analogy, before you were castling into my pawn storm. Now you're just walking your King into the centre of the board, so it no longer makes any sense to pawn storm your already ridiculous King.
FYI of the few facts about this guy that I did read, it would seem you have completely misinterpreted yet another. He didn't lose his job for playing chess at work. He quit when he was told that he was no longer allowed to do so.
P.S. Please continue to play psychologist. I would lover to hear more about the root causes of my mockery.

take a breath, think about it for a second. And try again. You can figure this out, I know you can. You just have to read, like in school, good boy.

Do you even understand what you're trying to say anymore? No? You're more focused on saving face via some ridiculous strategy to make me appear stupid by talking patronisingly to me for no reason? Huh? Everybody who's read this thinks I'm an asshole already. I don't know why you'd want to join me... They already think you're a moron. I'd stick at that if I were you.

I would say everyones got it exactly right. I've never claimed to be anything but a struggling chess player with half a dozen concussions under my belt. You certainly are an asshole I won't argue with that, but your just getting angry because your not a good reader. I get it. So now make a point that doesn't bore everyone to tears,or go find a forum that let's dogs bark.
Hi Chess addicts,
As a Dutchman I'm quite familiar with the concept of chesscafe's. For example, in my hometown Groningen we have Café Atlantis and in Amsterdam 'De Laurierboom' is problably the most famous nowadays.
But what about New York, Paris, Rome or any other city in the world? Where are the best chess cafe's on this globe?
Curious about your opinion!
