g3
Best first move for the white.

There is no "best" move, the different openings lead to different positions. A simple example is the old: 1. e4 leads to open positions, and 1. d4 leads to closed positions.
I teach kids in chess, and i always learn them to play 1. e4 and then just develop their pieces, just like the Italian. I believe it leads to good play, for beginners.

The best move is dependent on what your wants are from the game you are about to play. i.e. Do you want to play something that works well with your style? Do you want to play something that maybe your opponent isn't comfortable with? A combination of both?! etc...

(drumroll) 1. D4!! (DOUBLE EXCLAM!)
THIS OPENING IS REVERED BY PATZER AND WORLD CHAMPION ALIKE!! PLAYING IT RIGHT (as in, 2800 level or Rybka 4 level), will give you a slight plus in EVERY LINE!! CALL NOW AND ORDER YOURS TODAY!!!!
It really depends what you are playing.
If you are playing normal games in which everyone has 1h 45m the best move for white is e4. Unless your opponent is taller then 1.80, then d4 is best. If you are playing rapid best is to play g3. And with bullet best is to play g4 and then offer a draw unless it's a saterday evening, then it's best to surrender and get a beer.

Depends on what you're comfortable with and what you know well. Usually e4 is good because it's what most people learn first. Hypermodern openings are my new favorite, like g3 or b3 to prepare for a fianchetto, and people aren't really familiar or comfortable with them, but it's a starting trend, so that won't work as a suprise much longer.

This one reminds me of a thread where a person "found out" that in order to win every game you need to play the best moves.
We did remind him that playing a best moves doesn't necessarily mean that you will every game, only that you will not lose (unless chess is somehow a forced win from 1st move).

The best move for white is pancakes for breakfast...served hot!
Black can try to counter with the waffle house.
Alternatively, black can also respond with french toast sticks.
Then there are the less common alternatives.
Bread Pudding
Buttermilk Donuts
Breakfast Cake
Skillet Breakfast
Cheese and Sausage Muffins
Crepes
Many fine choices

I did not know anything about "cheese and sausage muffin" opening, so I think I'll have to study it a bit.

If you look at master games on the game explorer on this site (http://www.chess.com/explorer/) the best opening move for white statistically appears to be c4. (Using white win % - black win % as a measure of how "good" an opening move it and ignoring any opening moves with less than 100 games as this probably isn't a big enough sample to be representative). d4 and Nf3 as opening moves are hot on its heals though and e4 isn't bad and does have a relatively low draw percentage reiterating what many here have said about it being a good move to get into a fairly open game.
I found a statistical analysis of various opening sequences a while ago, which came to the conclusion that the best opening move (statistically speaking) is e4. However, the same analysis found that e4 is one of the worst opening moves if your opponent replies with c5.
Conclusion: Statistics is a very poor way to make chess decisions and I've just wasted another 5 minutes of my life on it.
Please, may I know what is the best first move for the white? Thank you.
