Best Free Chess Software

What is the best free chess software to download my chess.com analyzed games into? I would like to be able to re-analyze my games in that software as well. Bear in mind that I am lower strength so plain comments would be more useful to me than + or - numbers in the analysis.

I think both Chessmaster and Fritz can annotate games using words.  Neither of them are free, but some members have commented that the older versions can be found at bargain basement prices.  Chess System Tal II/Championship Chess/Tournament Chess is another older program that comments on moves in words.

For free software, there are programs like Arena or SCID, but the assessments are using informant symbols and centipawns.  Fritz 5.32 is available for free, but I don't recall if it comments in words or not.

Have you tried Penguin?  it is a small application, not too overloaded with functionality, is freeware and available from

It doesn't give hints at to the best moves to make, but it will allow you to store analysed lines of play.

Arena and SCID (or ChessDB, based on SCID) are the best free programs.

A friend of mine bought Chessmaster 10 at Staples for $10 two weeks ago. I have seen older versions of Fritz for as little as $20.

I use SCID, with Robolito. A fine combination, I think.

Check your local library.  Fritz was available at my library, which of course was free.

Not free, but Chessmaster 10 can be had for $10 nowadays. Great program, good tuturials, when replaying games it will tell you who's ahead along with lines of what should have been played. best $10 you will ever spend.
