Best iphone chess app?

This may be outside the topic as apparently this app does not allow you to play live games, but has anyone tried ChessTrainer on Iphone ?

I have seen a video here

http://www.mychesstraining.com/

and I don't know what to think about it

@Grumly:  You can try that one for free, although if you want the full 600 exercises, you have to make an "in-app purchase" for $2.99.

Chess Quest includes twice that many puzzles for the same price, but it lacks some of the fun elements of Chess Trainer:  rankings, personal ratings graph, dogs playing chess, etc.  :)

@ Grumly: thanks a lot for your answer !

indeed I just tried Chess Trainer, and I think the interesting points of this app are the ranking and the personal rating graph.

But I may give Chess Quest a look too, it looks quite rich !

I was pleased to get an update to the Stockfish app last night, which added a clickable move-list!!  If I sound inordinately excited about that, it's because this is only the 2nd app I've seen that has this feature - the other being tChess.

The Stockfish app (formerly called Glaurung) is a pretty amazing app, especially considering that it's free.  It's like a better designed version of Hiarcs ($9.99) and, unlike Hiarcs or Shredder, it natively supports both the iPhone & iPad.  In a word, woot.

Here's the new move list. (This is from the iPad - where both landscape and portrait orientations are supported. On the iPhone, it's portrait only.)

Would it be possible to upgrade it with 3.1.3 support? I was able to play old Glaurung on my old iPhone 2G, but Glaurung is unavailable now and Stockfish needs iOS 4.x for some reason to work...

DeepGreene

No, sorry... Stockfish requires iOS 4.2 or +  :(

So maybe it would be possible to return original Glaurung to AppStore? For some reason Stockfish has replaced Glaurung instead of being added as a new app...

And due to 4.x+ requirement, Stockfish is completely useless for people like me - with "old generation" devices... while more complex apps and games have 3.1.3 or even 3.x compatibility added with no problems...

I'm looking for a tactics app, something that I can practice with while on the buss etc, is there any particular app that's recommended?

DeepGreene

Try searching for "Chess Quest" or "TacticTrainer" - the former isn't so pretty, but I think it's the most 'robust.

there is huge database of openings (which you can browse by names) in tChess Pro, while Shredder offers 1000 tactical positions to solve

[smacks forehead] Yeah, I always forget Shredder has puzzles!

This one is really good.

Great, the shredder one had a limited use I felt, since it didn't really give you tactical problems based on your rating, rather it just drowned you with easy to spot 1-3 puzzles. Does this one track my performance and give me puzzles based on it?

Hi,

I'm chess player and developer of EloWorld. EloWorld is an app for iPhone/iPod touch which lets you get an idea of your next elo rating (FIDE, USCF, FFE). The app could be used on iPad too, in zoom mode.

The complete list of features, plus some screenshots, can be viewed on this page : http://www.bournisien.info/mes-applications/eloworld-calcul-du-elo-sur-iphone/
The app is available on the AppStore if you follow the link : http://itunes.apple.com/fr/app/eloworld/id446154369?mt=8
I'm looking forward to getting feedback observations and suggestions about the app : don't hesitate to contact me.

I have found out that chess variants are a great way to enhance one's chess playing skills because of their unusual approaches. One really good variant that teaches strong positional play, tactical and strategic sacrificing along with solid end game is ChessQueens for the iPhone.

There is nothing like 30 queens duking it out on the chess board. :-)

Here is my question: What app allows me to watch database games automatically without clicking next for every single move? I am digging through all the apps but so far everything appears to be manual. Anyone know which/any that have automatic playback? If Deep Green is the only one that does it, can we load PGN databases from anywhere?

As a side note, if anyone knows how to view games automatically on THIS site, I would be very grateful. I love how this site lets you rewatch games, but it's not really worth it to me if I have to keep clicking next. Maybe a script I could write or a mouseclicking bot? x.x Any ideas are appreciated.

The Cover Story of the October issue of Chess Life, the USCF publication, is about chess Apps.

You can't load/save PGN with Deep Green. The HIARCS app has the feature you're looking for, though - and you can configure the replay speed to pause for 1-8 seconds per ply.

Thank you so much DG! I had tried to get Hiarchs to do that before but couldn't figure out ho. But I just did a search on what you said and found it's in the hiarch menu, play mode, and then the replay row needs a checkmark next to it. Tested it and is just what I wanted.

As for this site, I found a mouse bot that works great, you just need to set its "locate" right over the '>'.

And I just downloaded Chess-wise. Thanks Nate... I'm not sure how I missed that one. I see I just hit the movie reel icon and it autoplays. Lots of games and very nice ^^b

As for Deep Green, it has plenty of great reviews about its elegant look/feel/sound but I already bought 20+ chess apps and am having trouble justifying its purchase at this point. And I am very happy now because I don't think I would have ever realized Hiarchs could do that without you mentioning it. So thanks again!
