who do you think is/was the best at playing the king's gambit?

MathBandit

Fischer.

Morphy, all the way. Look up his games. Brilliant.

Though a blunder by Karpov helped, Spassky beat Karpov in game 2 of their 1982 match with nothing but the King's Gambit. With that said, though, if you want to know how to play against it, check out the original tv broadcast of that game on youtube -- it comes with the players' reasoning behind every move. Karpov was a genius!

Fischer only played the Bishop's Gambit on a couple of occasions so he could hardly be considered the best at it. Adolf Anderson and Paul Morphy have some fantastic games with the King's Gambit. Some more modern practicioners include Nigel Short and Spassky.

i'm actually thinking about playing with it and was considering looking at some GM games where it was played.

Spassky probably has a billion such games, so help yourself. By the way, I like and play the King's gambit myself. I just felt that until Karpov carelessly hung a rook to a knight fork, he made one of the greatest players of all time look like a positional patzer. No offense to Spassky. :)

I think that Deep Rybka 4 running on a hundred-core platform (!!!!!) would be a head and a shoulder above all other King's gambit players. It would, as GM Jesse Kraai said on chess.com tv during this year's match between Anand and Topalov, "eat any human player alive"!!!

Spassky never lost with the King's Gambit and that says a lot for him since he played it quite a bit at the highest levels.

He does have some losses with it, but granted, those where after his decline. When he was at his best, his kings gambit was an unstoppable force.

Fischer, Spassky, and players of the Morphy era.
