Best Opening for Black

Hello everyone! I have been pretty much into openings, as playing the four Knights game it’s too boring. And also even after I have increased so much of my rating, I would not like to play that four nights opening and the standard set ups et cetera. So for White, I played a fried liver attack, the Italian game. But I have been struggling to find opening with black, even though I know many.

Each time, I am not satisfied enough with my openings from black. I know the Caro-Kann and French Defence, but still it’s pretty annoying giving my open in the centre even though the theory is good.

I tried the sicilian, but I don’t know what, it just doesn’t feel too good to play that opening.

I tried the E6-B6 setup, but I am having trouble with my light squared bishop.

I have a proper opening for black in the queens pawn opening, Englund gambit.

But what opening should I play with black? I feel Petrov’s defence might be a little good, but I fear it can turn into four nights game sometimes which is like so boring that I feel to resign the game.

Please tell me the comments about which opening is the best for me, I really need help with this. Even if you look at my statistics of black, I lose a lot with black compare to white.

It doesn't matter which opening you play, as long as you play it well.

At your level openings do not matter. You do not lose games because of the opening, you lose games because of blunders and tactical errors.

"playing the four Knights game it’s too boring." ++ It is not boring, you see this wrong.

"But I have been struggling to find opening with black, even though I know many."
++ You do not know any.
You can say you begin to know an opening after you have played 100 classical games with it.

"Each time, I am not satisfied enough with my openings from black."
++ Why? Do not blame the opening for your losses.

"I know the Caro-Kann and French Defence" ++ Those are good, pick one and stick to it.

"it’s pretty annoying giving my open in the centre" ++ Then play 1...e5 or 1...c5

"I tried the sicilian, but I don’t know what, it just doesn’t feel too good to play that opening."
++ Sicilian is good, but it has much theory and is very sharp: you run a bigger risk of losing

"I tried the E6-B6 setup, but I am having trouble with my light squared bishop."
++ That is no good objectively, but playable at your level.

"I have a proper opening for black in the queens pawn opening, Englund gambit."
++ That is a very bad opening, but playable at your level.

"I feel Petrov’s defence might be a little good" ++ Petrov is very good.

"it can turn into four nights game sometimes which is like so boring"
++ That is not boring at all. You have a skewed perception of what is boring.

"I really need help with this." ++ You need more help in other areas. You mentioned several good defences for black. Pick one and stick to it, so as to accumulate experience with it.

"I lose a lot with black compare to white." ++ That is normal. With white you can afford to lose a tempo. With black you have to play more accurate. The key is to pick 1 defence and then stick to it. Analyse your lost games and learn from your mistakes. If you always play the same defence as black, then you gain more experience with the resulting positions than your opponent.

i dont think that the 4 knights is "standard"

clarification: fried liver is 6.nxf7, not 4.ng5 and italian is (i think) 3.bc4, not 3...bc5

i think that is literally black's worst first move vs d4

against 3.nc3 you could try c6 or something weird maybe if you hate the 4 knights that much

I can completely relate. Since you like to play aggresively you could probably try the traxler counterattack as it seems like a diverse fried liver. It might seem interesting to you. Imo french is a solid way to play aggresively at some point, as there are hidden traps. Also, yes I think that the Englund gambit against d4 is really playable at my level, if you know what to do and what to expect.

Generally if you know really well an opening, meaning you really understand why you play each move, what is the goal behind it and what to do if it is not going to work that way, and do not just memorize some moves, you can then adjust the middlegame to your playing style.
