I rather thought there'd be an immediate solution offered. I did find a magnetic checkbook set from House of Staunton for a whole $5, but I was thinking more of an electronic opponent rather than a set to play against myself.
Anybody?

Excalibur used to have a New York Times Deluxe Chess. I picked one up a few years ago, and it is really neat. I am uncertain if it is still made, you might be able to find one somewhere. Check out this link to at least take a look: http://www.buy.com/prod/excalibur-ny-times-deluxe-chess/208966339.html
Also, along the lines of the suggestions by Bronco70, what about an I-pod touch if you can get wireless at work and simply download the chess.com app? That might be a good option. By the way Bronco70, was the chess on the Nook any good? I thought I saw a chess game on the latest Nook color while window shopping one day.
I have the ipad by Samsung 7" screen 3g basically for navigation (truck driver) when i check in on this site the graphics are the same as sitting at home in front of my computer. The hand touch board size is perfect i have had ZERO problems and with no limitations .
Yeah, every nook except the Simple Touch includes chess. I can't speak to it's ability, but, like most games, it's stronger than I am.
I'm mostly hoping to avoid buying a $300-$500 tablet just to play chess, the ipod touch is an idea, but I already have the Kindle Fire which is likely a better experience in comparison. I guess I rather assumed (incorrectly) that there was some go-to solution out there. I suppose most people have smartphones. I don't even have access to Wi-Fi at work.

Greetings, all! I have been going back-and-forth on various tablet/Kindle Fire options for a portable chess option with little luck. I work in 911 dispatch in a small county and have a lot of time that I would like to fill somewhat intelligently. At the moment, I own both a Nook Simple Touch and a Kindle Fire. The Fire is fine, but I really don't care for the extra weight or reading on an LCD. The Simple Touch would be perfect if they allowed apps - I think an e-ink chess unit is a genius idea, and I've seen the NST rooted, but I don't think I care to get that deep into it. I don't have a smartphone... Any other options? What are people using? I know the lower-end Kindles used to have games, but my library is predominately on nook and I don't care to re-buy it...
Thanks,
